Rear bumper and valance - 3.2 Carerra
fat fuchs replied to 32FlatSix's topic in All Other TECHNICAL issues
The 3.2 valance also has a different profile in 'section' to the earlier version and each have corresponding bumperettes. -
The old boots are of a different design Ivan because the car had standard tie rods. To my knowledge the boots aren’t interchangeable? Happy to be educated on this though. Just to add, I installed Lemforder tie rods and not the cheaper alternative. The threads on Pelican suggest it’s the cheaper version that suffers from splitting. Cheers FF

STEERING 'CLUNK' RESOLVED The loose tie rod arm was unsurprisingly, the cause of the clunking sound. As I had the rack removed and access was easier, I decided to install Turbo tie rods and am impressed with the results. The steering is so much sharper but that may be partly a result of everything now being torqued correctly. Bump steer has also been reduced slightly but still may fit washers to the rack to remove that completely at some stage.

Auto Mundial reported this morning that VW are to reduce production of their EV range due to a lower level of customer demand than anticipated. First of many maybe or just the VW range not appealing enough?

STEERING 'CLUNK' INVESTIGATION & MISSION CREEP During the last couple of drives I noticed some vagueness in the steering together with an occasional 'clunk' felt through the steering wheel. I did the obvious checks on ball joints, steering column top bush, tie rods and wheel bearings etc. but nothing too obvious other than some slight play in one inner tie rod bushing. Nothing conclusive so investigated further. First up was to check the universal joints... Decided to install Turbo Tie Rods rather than replacing like for like so ordered those. Still have some concerns that the UJ's may also be knocking even though they 'feel' ok. Will hook everything back up before taking the plunge on those. £££££££££

Sold a good one last year and it achieved £125 on eBay which surprised me tbh

They do have some flex in them but should be straight with no ‘kinks’.

You should have 3 welded spacers and a single removable spacer. The removable spacer allows the spring plate to relax in its lowest setting when being removed or indexed. There is a fair amount of play on the splines when you insert the torsion bar so that’s not a real test. A geo check will likely highlight any issues.

I'm all for saving time/money where possible on repairs but, if you're separating the spring plate from the trailing arm to do the inner bushes too, re-alignment would be a good idea. I've just changed spring plates on two cars noting all angles and wheel camber etc. but still couldn't replicate the original settings. Although you may not notice a difference you may start to notice uneven tyre wear. As you say, no harm in trying and then doing alignment later if required. Cheers FF

Excellent work 🤩

I would say it’s under achieved based upon the totally rotten, non running SC targa’s they sold that achieved mid thirties last year.

ROAD TEST POST WINTER WORKS Travelled up to visit my parents in the car to highlight any issues following the work on the car over the winter. It's a 275 mile round trip so easily enough to get everything warmed through and the brakes tested under various conditions. Luckily all went ok and got an average of 25 mpg which isn't too bad. The engine is still dry underneath but can't break the habit of doing a visual check every time I park up.

OIL TANK LEAK / TUNNEL BRAKE LINE / HAND BRAKE CABLES Driving the car back from a local coffee shop, the brakes got progressively worse and by the time I pulled on to the drive at home, the hand brake was all I had left in terms of stopping power. To add insult to injury, the oil tank also appeared to be leaking slightly. Got the car on stands and asked Mrs FF to press the brake pedal resulting in fluid squirting out from the only line not changed on the car, the tunnel brake line. I was unable to find the offending line for sale so made it up from nickel copper using a newly acquired flare tool. Installing this line is no fun and requires the removal of seats, transmission mount, front undertray, heater control unit etc., etc. On to the tunnel brake line... Hand brake cables... Will hopefully finish up tomorrow. Bloody old cars

Wurth satin black is thought by many to be the best match to the original finish. That’s based upon reading not personal experience.
