Gravelly sound on acceleration low revs, low speed
Mcinven replied to Mcinven's topic in 3.2 Carrera
I'm not certain it's the gearbox, but it sounds like a mechanical/transmission or engine sound, rather than something just rubbing - I'm not applying much load on the engine for it to happen, i guess the point is, its noticeable at low revs / low speeds when the engine is under a bit of load -

I don't remember it before the rebuild, it was quite a thorough job though, so i'm really hoping it's not something that's been done wrong! -
Hi all, wondering if anyone has experienced this, I have a 1985 3.2 with a recently rebuild 915 gearbox, which is now nice and smooth, but i have noticed when the engine is under load, at low revs I can hear a mechanical sound, quite gravelly in nature, quite metalic/mechanical, a sort of scraping - engine runs nice and smoothly, no rattles, and pulls well, so really not sure if it's normal, or what the cause might be? any help greatly appreciated thanks!

heya no its not that because i partly had them fitted to try solve the problem - although actually my old ones were terrible - its definitely better since, i don't think much is getting in the cabin, its more when i start it up in my parking space, or sat in traffic it just seems to pack a real punch - some friends following me before said it smelt strong, which is why i thought it was running too rich the feeling i get sometimes is an aching around the neck and upper back - also noticed I get thirsty very quickly - maybe i'm just hyper sensitive to something?! also the car has never leaked a drop on the ground since i've owned it
-
Actually i tried it with one of those electronic ones and it never registered much of a reading - but it didn't when i held it in front of the exhaust pipe either, so not sure i have that much faith in it!
-
everything else seems fine, there's just something in the fumes which feel quite toxic? i'll check the hoses - pic attached too, afraid it's not that great, so probably won't shed much light on anything!
-
Ah thanks - i'll check that! - come to think of it, it does make a hissing sound from somewhere near the front....very odd.
-
I'm sure the cabin is alright now - it wasn't before i replaced the heat exchangers - its more that it belts out some intense fumes!! more than an average car, maybe they all do this, i just don't know! (it doesn't smoke by the way.....well not much)
-
Hi All, really not sure why this is happening but the exhaust fumes on my 1985 3.2 carrera make me feel ill. I've now got new heat exchangers and the system is all stainless with no leaks, heating system all working as it should, its nothing to do with fumes in the cabin. Never had this with any other car so really scratching my head as to the cause? I thought the car was running too rich, but when i took it to a garage, they said it was running too lean! any help appreciated? thanks

Ok great thanks for the advice, will get on the case! Jim

Hi there, has anyone replaced just the rear seal? (mine has become detached) - does the sunroof need to be removed to do the job? can anyone recommend somewhere in London area for doing this - i'm not quite sure how much of a big job it is? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for the great tips!

haha yep that def confused me!

thanks for the replies - i haven't had the car too long, and new exhaust and gaskets were on it already, looking at some recent receipts looks like a previous owner had fitted new gaskets maybe to try and solve the same problem? I asked a garage about it too, but they thought everything looked in order with exhaust and gaskets and haven't noticed any oil leaks at all - i might just bite the bullet and get the exchangers replaced
