BB’s ex RB 3.2 Hot Rod

The filter invoice will (I think) be in the records somewhere.  It was recommended by @MaxDiesel who created the box that translates the MAF signal to Motronic.  I washed it and cleaned the MAF hot film sensor before selling to Alex as it was dirty and causing the car to occasionally cut out.  That seemed to fix things.  Any filter that is roughly the same size/shape will work though.

The air filter is a K&N E-1987: https://www.knfilters.co.uk/air-filters/e-1987-replacement-air-filter

Ordered a new K&N filter. Ordered a couple of pipes that hook onto the idle speed adjuster (look perished). Ordered new spark plugs. Ordering a dizzy cap, rotor arm, fuel filter. Guessing starting with a decent base of new service parts is a good way to go when I take it for service.

Contis arrived, got them fitted on the rims and fitted back up to the car. Like contis.

Took the spark plugs out. Black with soot. Running very rich I’d guess. Also idling a bit fast. Vacuum leak? Dirty air filter? Dirty fuel filter?

Gotta love those wheels

Wheels looking ok.  If you need the colour, its Shirish's Ford Capri Solar Gold over new anodising.

Thanks Richard. Up close, the gold paint has kind of cracked like a mosaic all over the painted surface. I honestly thought it was a wrap. Tyre fitter who mounted the conti's is a part time sprayer and he confirmed it was paint still. Didn't take a photo. Was it like that when you had it?

Gents, do you want me to make an addition to the thread title to reflect BB’s stewardship of the beast?

Sure VT if Richard is OK with that. I did think of starting a new thread but thought really, this car belongs on this thread. As a reference for me as much as anyone interested.

I have no dog in the fight, so change whatever you like on the thread.

Wheel paint sounds odd - don't recall that.  Its clear coat over the gold.  I imagine its heat and its the clear that has crazed.  If you masked it off you could sand back and re clear. Probably.  Just don't let a wheel restorer skim them or you lose the anodising, which was done at vast effort and expense.

Will do. Not offending me. Looks kinda cool actually. Mosaic crazed centres on wide Fuchs. Another original feature.

Tyres should be sorted Tuesday

Service on Wednesday.

Cant wait. This weekend not driving it because of tyres is killing me. Lol Hell of a machine.

Your 930 must be phenomenal Richard. You should bring it to wales on 5/6th August. Love to see it.

Ha! God, I’d forgotten all about 70s sun strips. A neighbour had one in green with white number plate letters on his metallic brown Mk I Escort, complete with lifted rear suspension and red fog light on the diff!

No proper sun visors so a sun strip it is. RB had engineered a sort of rotating sun visor mind. Works well.

Took Daisy in for a service today. Dave Griffiths Racing in Shrewsbury. Nice bunch. Father and son team. Dad worked extensively on race engines and is taking it a little easier these days. His son Ben is now the chief mech there.

Had a good look at the car. A couple of problems;

1. Air leak from 964 plenum into the cylinders. Sprayed a bit of something around the base of the legs of the plenum at the cylinders and it sucked it in and spluttered. They think either the gaskets are knackered (if used) or the plastic blocks the plenum legs sit on are cracked. When fixed, should fix the slightly high idle and ensure all air is coming through the filter and through the plenum.

2. Driveshafts. Bit of play on both. Nearside worse. With the gearbox ends held tight, the wheel moves a little back and forth. Going to remove both and check to see what’s worn. Any ideas?

3. Brake pad wear indicators cut off. Need reinstating.

Said I could leave it there and they’ll take the intake and shafts off to inspect and advise what needs doing. Last thing I want is a driveshaft letting go and whipping around under the car at speed. So I was quite happy to leave with them and see what needs doing.

They offered to drive me home. Hour and three quarters each way! That’s service. Interesting chap Dave Griffiths. Worked with Richard Atwood, Derek Bell and others.

The pad wear light comes on intermittently in the car. Worth having right?

Bypass pad sensors , lots of us have done it , you can then run any pad you want even if it doesn’t have the recesses for the sensors

I’ve done without for several years now, easy to check material, if needed.

Wondered how badly serviced/inspected a car would need to be, to require pad depth sensors before every 12 months.
