Most of the time my indicators work fine. However after a longish drive or if the car interior is warm the flashing stops. I get a single pulse then the indicator light on the dashboard stays lit (frozen) in the position the stalk has been moved. Once this starts to happen then I make a point of applying the indicator stalk quite firmly and in most cases the indicators flash without stopping .............. The flashing always works perfectly when the car is cold.

When it comes to electrics I'm lost! What is this a dodgy flasher unit or a poor contact at the stalk switch?

What should I do where do I need to look ............

Any thoughts, tips etc.. welcome

If moving the stalk changes what is happening when it goes wrong, then that suggests there is a fault with the stalk, but the stalk won't control the flashing, it just directs current towards the relay, so I think your problem might be elsewhere.

What happens again? You flick the stalk up to go right say, and the indicators will just stay lit on the right?

I think the problem will be either in the relay or the indicator stalk, but think the relay is much more likely for the reasons that JG says. In any event, this is the easiest/cheapest fix so is the logical starting point. I'd recommend that you replace it and either solve the problem or rule it out as an issue. The relay is located under the hood, tucked right up to the dash on the drivers side. See the picture of mine below - its the fore most relay that's all black (i.e not the rear one with white writing on). Its the bonnet ram on the left.

You may need to disconnect the electrical connector directly underneath but inside the cab. I've tried to show this in the photo below. Its the large round black "plug" on the left nearest the circular ventilation pipe.

If this doesn't work then I'd change the stalk. I did this very recently and got it from EuroCarParts at a cost of £69 less vat. You need to remove the wheel, remove the horn pad and remove the upper & lower plastic binnicales. You can then undo two mounting screws and remove it. You'll need to disconnect various connectors/wires. Awkward but straight forward as long as you note what goes where. Pic below of my dash shows the level of disassembly needed.

These jobs can get involved - I was simply fixing u/s parking lights on one side. My problem was a loose connection from the stalk to the ignition switch. Good luck. David

Basically yes - they may just stay lit or flash two or three times and then stay lit. Problem seems to be avoided if the stalk is flicked sharper and firmer. Was hoping it was just the relay but I suspect contacts at the stalk .............

David thanks for the pics and notes these are really useful .........

Take the switch out and clean it as won't harm things, but I think you are in the relay zone. I agree with David; it's a good idea to change it if it's any way suspect.
