Identifying Prodrive SCRSs

Nick Moss

Recommended Posts

I'm doing a bit of research on the Rothmans SCRSs and need a bit of help. I'm trying to identify which car was driven by whom in various rallies in 1984, 85 and 86. Who can find pictures of the various cars, showing the number plates, and preferably the driver details as well? The drivers I am aware of are Henri Toivenen, who drove in the European Rally Championship, Said el Hajri and Billy Coleman. There were 5, possibly 6, Rothmans cars, the reg numbers I know of are A974 BRX, A451 BJB and A815 CCF. What else can you guys come up with?

They weren't actually Prodrive cars, Nick. They were Dave Richards Motorsport, in Rothmans colours. DRE were based at Silverstone at the time and were later to become Prodrive, with a shift of operations. A chap called John Spiller was an administrator at DRE at the time and became a co-driver in one of the cars. He subsequently went to work for a team in Dubai, the name of which I may be able to find out next week. The names of the drivers you have are correct, save for one spelling; it is Saeed Al Hajri, a Qatari which might be a tenuous link to John Spiller.

In 911&PW magazine there was a story of a reunion of those cars some time last year. Can't find the issue now.

There was also a Finnish built replica of Henri Toivonen's Costa Smeralda winner car.

Thanks guys. I have a copy of the 911 & P World article and I'm only interested in period photos or info, so no replicas thanks ;)

This is the sort of thing I'm after

Toivonen & Piironen 1st Madeira Rally 1984 in A815 CCF. This is a period Rothmans PR picture.

OJT is correct on this, John Spiller is now Rally manager/co-ordinator for Malcolm Wilson

Motorsport (FORD), he's a great bloke, and loves to talk about the Porsche days at DRE,

as he loves these cars. I'm sure if you contact him, he would give you all the info. you need,

as he keeps records of EVERYTHING!

Thanks guys, those are good contacts for inside info.

Nick - do you know Johan? He's the font of all knowledge on these cars, especially the 2 belgian ones.

http://scrs.eye4u-productions.be/ or http://911motorsport.be/?p=240

I can put you in touch if you like. All cars at this event were real ones, so its a good starting point.

Cheers, Hamish

Thanks for that one, which I didn't have before, it's El Hajri on the 1985 Acropolis. Here are a couple more from the same event

This is the car that started this investigation. It's owned by a friend of mine and he's trying to fill in a few gaps in it's history.

BTW OJT, Prodrive claim to have set up in 1984, so I don't think I'm wrong in describing these as Prodive Rothmans SCRSs

Haha, sorry I was just wondering which person in the photo Alex was (there when it was taken) ? I assumed he was standing on the steps. Welcome Alex :)
