From what I can see no one really knows what to do with form V112. I've seen some suggestion you should keep it in your car in case you get stopped but at the end of the day all its doing is allowing you to declare your car exempt for a variety of different reasons including that its 40 years old and it's easy to check that. The way I have read this is that your MOT expires and is still shown as expired because it has - but doesn't need (legally) to be renewed.

Its a real mess!

My 1982 SC was off the road (SORN) between 2015 and July this year.

As it had been off the road with no MoT for a long period, I assumed that it would need an MoT to go back on the road and then apply for road tax classification as a Historic Vehicle.

Once I had the fresh MoT in my hand, I went to the Post Office - the first local one told me that the person dealing with such affairs was not in until the following day. I went to the larger PO in the nearest town and handed over my V5 & fresh MoT. The lady didn't even look at the MoT and did the change to Historic Vehicle direct with DVLA on her computer and told me I was legal to use the car immediately.

I thought I would have to wait until I received the new V5 and then apply for £0 road tax - she told me no, I was legal to go on the road right away.

Still awaiting the V5 though.

Just retaxed my Midget on line and you have to click a declaration that the car is mot exempt due to it being more than 40 years old and not materially altered. Before I clicked the declaration it already said the vehicle was Historic class.

What happens when you go and do an online MOT check?

You get this;

This vehicle's MOT has expired

You can be fined up to £1000 for driving without a valid MOT.
This vehicle may be MOT exempt, for more information refer to MOT exemption guidance

Well, if it’s not MOT’d and it’s not exempt you will get a fine sent through the post. I never had one for the 911 and I haven’t had one for the BMW. So, unless you get a fine sent through, who cares?

Although just check my w108 Merc and it says mot expired as per Matt’s post. Both are registered historic. All very confusing.

Check tax it says taxes and mot both green. Check mot and it says red 🥴

OK, my 914 might not be the best example. I registered it as Historic when I imported it so it’s never been down as needing tax and MOT and has never had an MOT. MOT check site reports

I don't think they hunt you down for not having an MOT - the government officials are too busy catching pensioners for not having a TV licence.

I think the bigger challenge would be in the event of a major claim - theft, fire or hefty shunt. I could imagine an insurance company demanding proof of roadworthiness - receipts for 2 gallons of oil and an oil filter may not meet the requirements.

2 different searches via the DVLA, Tax which shows the MOT status as well and just MOT which shows red

It's always reassuring to know that our government websites offer consistent and reliable information at all times.

Renewal time and my Hagerty policy has pretty much doubled from 553 to 1011.38 covering both cars. Going to look around as I am sure I can get that down a bit.

Makes my increase from 141 to 177 seems reasonable. Still going to looks around though. Not looking forward to my daily cars renewals :(

Les, I don’t think that they want your business, unless you are a high net worth individual who they can squeeze extra business from.💵💵💵

My renewal quote with classicline £254, best alternative quote is £230 with Adrian Flux.

Yep, group policies are brilliant. Mine actually went down this year with a higher value of cars insured 😱🤷🏼‍♂️ Locktons collector policy

Thanks chaps, thats encouraging. I added my son (28 this year) to the policy last year which is also a big reason for the high premium

Renewal quote from Lockton: £507.52

Just got a quote from Classicline: £363

1988 Carrera Coupe valued at £74k

The Classicline insurance is with an underwriter called ERS Group. Anybody have any experience of them?

That seems a lot of money Chris.  My last renewal with Carole Nash was£149 with agreed value a little below yours, 5k miles a year and Euro breakdown.  I am a bit older of course…….

ERS = Eagle Red Star, Classicline always use them
