All you hipsters with centre fill gas tanks ,did you have them coated internally or are they bare steel ? .Anybody know how they come from the Factory treated internally or not ?

Please post you answers on the back of a fender

Dont think you can coat the inside of a 911 tank as it has some funny gauzes that hate the paint. Just clean it out and keep it full of fuel - that should keep the inside looking pretty fresh ;)

does 5 quid fill them to the top ?

Are you modifying an original or fabricating a new tank?

If new would aluminium be an option?

modifying my OE one ,ive got an old funky 1950s spout complete with flip top cap to weld onto it.

The front of my car doesnt need any more weight off so alloys not an option + it needs to be cheap as ive got an expensive winter list to get through

Its not treated internally. Having gazed thru the gaping hole in the top of mine while filling it, at least mine isn't treated anyway. You can see the varnish type residual that petrol leaves over bare steel and thats it.

You could pull the sender from yours to double check.

I should have looked at yours properly at Spa ,what have you done for a tank vent ?

Are you sure?

They should be made from steel flash plated in a lead tin alloy – it has the appearance of clean steel but resists oxidisation.

You could very well be right - certainly makes sense and looks like what I can see. I guess I should have said its not painted.

Andy - the cap is vented. I have the R to RSR cap and pipe kit and you don't need to add any other vent. When its really full and on track it spills a very small trickle but has proved to be fine in all other circumstances. I would imagine somewhere like Car Builder Supplies sells vent kits for the kit car scene.

Plenty have done this mod on DDK, there must be some info on there?

I'd be tempted to try and coat the neck of the filler extension with something as most of the time its going to be exposed. Can you use stainless steel for the neck?

Posted

So far, my filler neck doesn't even have a flash of rust and its been on for a yr and a bit. Maybe it is stainless? Looks a bit like it in the photos on Andy Hornby's website but nothing in the description. Outside of mine is painted but I can try a magnet on it.

Magnet suggests they are both plain old steel. Shining a light in the tank reveals (a) its very clean and (b) it is coated in something that looks like galvanising or the surface you get after using POR15 Metal Ready.

When I built my tank I coated it internally and externally with the POR 15 tank sealer. The gauze is a simple cylindrical filter which sits inside the tank at the delivery tube connection. The sealer would definetly block it. There is also a swirl pot feature fitted inside which is made of plastic and may react badly to coating. I simply removed all of it and installed flow and return pipes through the new centre fill neck.

Mine is vented from the original point with a u tube running up high before exiting through the nearside front inner wing. Its really worth foam filling too it reduces surge and is a bit safer .

( I've got some spare new foam blocks in the loft if your interested?)
