I have made a housing off the mould that I made,it weighs in at 135grams,(camera on the blink,will add pics tomorrow)

I think they will come in at about 200 grams with the fittings,just need to find some nice bulb holders now.

Are these or these any good Theo, you would need to mould a tube into you housing and then you could bond them in

Is that each and what does a stock unit weigh?

Thanks for that. :signs118:

Yes that is per each.

I will check weight of the stock units tonight,I think they were about a kilo, if not a bit more.(just cheked-1.35kg)

I am going to do some more work on the mould,they are ok,but not easy to lay up .

I think Iwill may make a" thimble" to take the bulb holder ,that may also eliminate the need for a cover over the back.

Cool Theo :ani_clapping:

How are the lenses going to screw into the housings (presuming there won't be a threaded hole in the housings) ?

There will be threaded inserts to take original screws.

Thanks Theo (thought that just after I posted the question :doh2:) lightweight ones hopefully :P

+1, nice effort :ani_clapping:

I think they will come out at about £150. for the pair.

I will use a weatherproof plug on the back,that should eliminate the need for full on cover over the back which would just add weight.?

I will update the pics as the bits turn up.

Some help please.

Do l.e.d's need some sort of driver or can they go straight onto a dc system.?Thinking of using them on my car,would they draw less current?

If you are referring to retrofit automotive LED bulbs, then the "driver" is in the bulb itself so no additional circuitry is needed.

But, If you want to connect plain old LEDs, then you need to limit the current to ~10mA by fitting a series resistor. You can work out the resistor value as follows:

Ohms law V=IR

V = 12 (12VDC)

I = 0.010 (10 mA)

R = V / I = 12 / 0.010 = 1200 ohms or "1K2" in electronics speak.

The auto LED bulbs usually use ~20 ultrabright LEDs - I expect these draw about 20mA each so 20 x 0.02 = 0.4 Amps. At 12V that is 4.8 Watts (P=IV)

:blink: I just got the bulbs from Ultraleds and put 'em in the taillights....

Yeah that's fine but Theo just said "LEDs" - it wasn't clear if he was buying LED car bulbs or trotting down to Maplins. He also asked about current draw. :smartass:

Thanks for the input gents. :signs118:

What I want to achive is standard bulb holders for the standard bulb,but the option to fit led bulbs,just wanted to know if the l.e.d bulbs would need some sort of driver,from the comments ,I should just be able to swop out a standard bulb with a l.e.d. ?

That's what I did.

(Sorry to be pedantic).

YES you can fit one of these:

12V LED Bulb

No, you cannot fit one of these (without a series resistor):
