I have started work on a rs style carpet set.During trail fitting I found that going straight on to the bare metal does not give the best visual effect, thinking of using a light underlay,it would up the overall weight, but the saving being made over the original carpet is already quite a lot.May also help keep the sound levels down a bit.

that looks pukka Theo! :signs118:

what kind of fabric are you using? I guess carpet fabrics have to be very strong?

I'd be interested in a set of these Theo. :)

It might be worth cutting some small swatches to send out for people to see/feel the quality of the carpet? I know the US lot (AppB) provide several types of quality of carpet, ie silverknit, perlon etc. and different people may have different preferences? I had some offcuts of an RS carpet from a 964 and it was very thin and lightweight but also surprisingly soft and decent quality. Can send you a piece if you wanted to compare with your own as i still have the offcuts ?

I have seen some other lightweight carpet offered in the past and it was no better than cheap felt !

Do car carpets have to be treated in any kind of anti-fungal spray? ie different to house interior carpets due to their exposure to damp etc.

I wouldnt be adverse to a light underlay if it improves fitting.

Thanks for the input.

I am using a very light carpet, easy to stretch and shape, quality does vary with price,I will try different brands and also see if I can get original spec, once the templates are right, then it should not make much difference as to what carpet one cuts from them.I will pick up some underlay and try that, some more pics soon.!!

These are for my car, once I am happy I will do kits.

I want the option to fit one rear seat for the nipper,so I need to come up with something that will look ok and be easily removable.

Maybe you can find some inspiration from my experience with an AppBitz kit here.

Yours is a nice work :ani_clapping:

great thread Mapo, i somehow missed the rest of it before :ani_clapping:

How are you getting on with that soundproofing you linked to? Does it do the job sufficiently? The profile layers of it seem just about right to do the job and it seems reasonably light. I have in-laws in Italy who could probably get me some so do you have a suppliers details out there? They are located in the north (Ravenna). Not that i am finding no s/proofing a problem at all, but swmbo will next time she rides in it!

Not sure whether this will help but I am going to use a material http://www.greenappleflooring.co.uk/en/pro...CFcEmtAodBBZqmw which is used for sticking wood floors. It's about 3mm thick, quite dense, and could be ideal for your application

Screwfix sell a version or anyone who fits wooden floors should have some - I could send you a little bit if you pm me (it'll be a very little bit - not got much spare!)

The car's more noisy than with the original soundproof material, but I think it is tolerable (not for my wife ghghghghgh). The panels are really light about 300 grams per sheet and are quite simple to assemble. You need 2 sheets making some economy, better having three, they are not expensive. You can try mail the manufacturer if they have an English dealer. I bought them where I work, it's a bit complicated, but if you don't find a better solution I could help you.

I have fitted the carpets now,I only used underlay where I relay thought it was not possible to get away with.Still a bit lumpy due to brackets and other bits on the body work, but the use of a under lay/sound barrier would help .I did not want to grind anything off the car as one day I may want to go back to stock.I made up some mouldings to help shape the carpet on the inner front wheel arch as the pockets have been eliminated.

The bottom mats are not glued in ,they will settle a bit with time.

looks a nice clean job Theo :signs118:

Thanks.

It took a while, the old carpets where quite streched, some bits needed doing again, but now I have decent templates to work off.

Its easy enough, just have to be patient, the spray glue allows one to pull a piece off and reposition it if you have to.

Yes , but Fred, have you seen any of this lot making Toffee or strawberry jam........etc etc etc.....

The easiest way for me to get a few hours in the garrage is to threaten to cook a meal.
