Hi All,

Missing the IB's Thinking of buying an SC Ive seen locally. Not entirely familiar with the model but have had a 3.2 and currently have a 964 project on the go. Car seems ok but hes looking for strong money IMHO. Anything I need to be aware of apart from the usual rust etc Im talking engine here. And what are SCs worth. Looks corrosion free  65k miles needs new exhaust crossover rear box oil lines , gearbox seems oK for a 915 (3.2 was a G50)- no top end rebuild etc

Thanks as always.

What is the asking price.? Depending on condition, they are up for anything between 6k and 20k,but I have not seen one actually sell for more than 13k.

Some really nice ones up at 16kplus,not seen them sell although if they are as good as the adds say ,they are probably worth it considering the amount of money you would have to throw at a "good" 10k car. :twocents:

Down your way, just along from the King's theatre there's a white 3.2 parked in the road, right shed of a thing!

Near the Kings?? Cant say Ive seen it. Didnt know there were any IBs in Portsmouth!

Hes looking for 13.5K and I think its a nice car but thats strong money in the current climate. Hes says its an origina rust free example - but after 30 years?? Think all of them have some rust even my 964 had it in the usual places when I went looking!

That seems a bit of a hefty price for an SC, i recently brought another 3.2 but was looking/considering another SC, this particular one caught my eye, (ebay item number 400262970723)

Has been up for sale for a while and reduced in price at least once, if you look past the non original carpets and seat retrim, and the bubbling on the bottom of the front wing by the door it looks fairly tidy.

I did ask a few questions regarding starting/idling (my last SC required the fuel mixture resetting following the air pump removal) this has what looks like an open/not blocked air feed pipe to the cylinders?? i didn't get a proper answer (but i didn't pursue it as i found the car that i eventually brought).

Might be worth a look if only to compare with the car local to you?

Not sure about that one- looks like its a Bitsa porsche. That other SC for 10.5 looks like a very good example.

Went and had a look at this 3.2 convertible as I loved the gold on burgandy 80's look.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-911-3-2-...=item1c22138bd0

Was disappointed to find a very tatty interior- shot hood, gearbox super vague and grinding in 1st and 3rd(Expensive). Corrosion in sills and god knows where else. However phoned round and engine had a complete rebuild due to a serious engine malfunction(oil supply or something)- It was running nicely from cold. Needed new oil lines and complete exhaust aswell.

All in a nice project but at a cost- 915 gearbox rebuild, rust respray retrim(V Tired interior)

The "Dealer"who was selling it had some other well cool cars, bmw mfrees n dat. But he refused my 7k offer which I thought was very generous- and he said he wouldnt shift on the price at all! lol Nuff said on dat bruvva.

Needless to say I beat a hasty retreat.

The car was actually a daily drive for a guy in Guildford before it ended up in NW London at this reputable dealer.

I know Im digressing, did anybody on here own it?

Wow.!

That must have been some engine rebuild.!!

IF the 13k car is as nice as the add says it is,and there really are very few issues, maybe a offer of 12ish is a good deal compared to a ten grand car plus another ten to sort it?

Yes indeed-I read the rebuild sheet lots replaced but looked like main dealer labour prices!!! Not sure if you could have bought a complete engine from Porsche for that!

I think 12k would be a good offer but its done 60k+ now so no longer a collector anorak item and therefore still strong money. Its only going to cost from now on therefore reliability issues come in. My last 3.2 proved to be bullet proof so therefore as a driving car and for reliability issues a 3.2 seems more appealing as I dont know how reliable SCs are and there seems to be a trend for people to put 3.2 engines in their SCs when their engines are shot.

SC motors are bulletproof.I can only think that 3.2 motors are more plentifull, and they have the added advantage of EFI.If the CIS is right on a SC ,there is not much to go wrong, and one at 65k miles is a good bet.

That is exactly what I would hope to find when I sell mine.Good luck with your search, you will find something at the right price if you are patient.

Watch out for snapped cylinder head studs. Mines on 64k, and found that little beauty when I took the valve covers off to adjust the valves. Fairly common, with plenty owners driving that do and do not know! Been told not to worry, unless another one on the same cylinder goes, but even so, it means a top end rebuild is looming, something I handn´t planned for at 64k...

If your serious about it, then check it before you seal the deal. Its money well spent (oil change + valve cover gasket kit). Plus you´ve got the piece of mind that you can then run it to the redline whenever you fancy. Not much fun driving like a granny. Got a mk4 diesel golf for that.

Thanks for the "heads up" but think its a tough one to convince the owner you just want to remove his rocker covers to check something.lol Think a f off will be the response.

I remember when I removed my 964 heads there were 3 snapped! Surely its possible to remove and replace the snapped one provided there is enough of the studd showing - without doing a top end??

Yep little b***ards. Im sure your right about the owner telling you to get lost, especially if you offer to do it on the drive way! Imagine stripping the oil tank thread, etc

Im thinking that some specialists offer this service as part of an inspection. Next time i´ll definatly do one. I think there is another way, something about rolling the windows down, and then thrashing the car hard from cold. Apparently its obvious. Not sure how well that will go down either! My two cents is, narrow down everything to the car you "want", and then spend the dosh. If you dont like the car enough to spend a 100 -150 quid or so, then you dont like the car! You could even have a leak detection done at the same time, to get an idea of the state of the valves, etc.

Anything that comes up, can then be negotatied straight off the asking price, and if it comes from a third party, then the owner will respect the knowledge. Of course I didnt do this on my last purchase, but having learning the hard way, Í will next time.

I'm on my second sc.

First a 1980, this one an '83.

270 000 odd and 232 000 km respectively.

Never hade issues with either: daily driving or driven hard.

Neither had had a rebuild.

They are an unbelievably solid car to start with.

But numbers and unloved mentality have meant fewer and fewer originals are left.

Because they've been relatively cheap for a long time, veen the original ones have hard lives.

Drive some really expensive ones and some cheaper ones to get an idea of what you like will cost you.

There's something magical about the last mechanical Porsche.

Even the more expensive ones are worth the money when it comes to driving.
