Greetings all,

I am gearing up for my first 911 purchase and am trying to decide between the SC and the 3.2 Carrera. My budget is 20k tops and for this, I am hoping that the prospective car will have had an engine rebuild and bodywork already sorted. This brings me nicely to this 1976 SC. The car is very alluring:

Does anyone know of this car and/or have any comments about it, the mods and the price?

I am prepared to wait it out for the right car.

Cheers,

Gary.

PS: I forgot to add that I am after a daily driver and occasional track day car.

Welcome Gary,

Take your time and try to have a look at as many cars as possible - these are not rare cars so there will always be good ones available on a regular basis, patience pays.

This particular car looks nice but its not original. Quite an old shell (galvanised?) so not sure how well it would stand up to the ravages of a UK winter.

Personally for a daily driver I'df choose a 3.2. All the character and charm of an IB period 911 but with better economy, performance, some creature comforts, EFI etc ... You should get a nice car for £20K.

For example, what about this car, posted elsewhere on this forum -

I forgot about the galvanisation or lack thereof and you are right this would not last many harsh winters. Shame as it is a beauty of a car. The 3.2 you mentioned looks very nice indeed and unsurprisingly, is already sold.

Do you know if many cars come onto the market in spring once the cars are out of hibernation?

This looks spot on and a much better price too: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C255878

Thanks,

Gary.

Gary,

That SC looks a lovely car. If the work carried out is to a high standard then relatively this represents good value IMHO. All the common areas of expense have already been dealt with. Worth a look!

All that effort yet they could not be bothered to fit the boot carpet neat............? Attention to detail would worry me with this one, also is that overspray on the seal of the boot?

Its not an SC though is it?

Its no longer a 2.7 and its not a C3, lot of money for a bitsa I reckon.

Welcome to the forum Gary, you have a decent amount to spend so you should be able to find a nice example of either an SC or Carrera 3.2 i take it as it will be your daily driver and a track day car you will want a coupe. I would say you would be better to find a car that has had a decent amount of work done properly to the body sills, kindney bowls etc what sort of mileage are you likely to put on it as a daily driver. Have a look on PIston Heads and the specialist websites Gantspeed has a good reputation, go to a few club meets and have a look at cars that are taken along to them advice is free and normally saves you a small fortune. Good luck and keep us all posted on your progress.

Welcome and with your £20k you should be able to get into a really very good car. If you find a good SC ask if the chain tensioners have been updated to the later type with oil feed, as If not and they fail it can get expensive.

If you are driving in town the later gear box G50 will be a benefit as it is more modern.

You are going to love this car and a lot of the fun is it takes a while to understand how good they are.

Enjoy the journey.

Light blue car if it has been well repaired looks good, it would be nice to see proof for your own peace of mind. If the car has got to be a daily driver £20k would get you a lot of Boxster much more civilised and user friendly on cold wet mornings. Good luck with the hunting and look at lots. Baz
