Yeah, I bought a seen running (by me at time of purchase) 61k miles 3.6 varioram with ECU etc, from a know/respected company for £10k about 2 months ago and I am happy with that price. 18k seems way to much for a partial engine, unless it has some special history or something. I got it from eBay, the guy used it to remove engines on tractor racing tractors. It’s rated at SWB of 2000kg. He’d to get a VFD as it was originally 3 phase. ALEX P Posted August 20, 2018 Share Posted August 20, 2018 Shouldn't really be surprised that 3.6's engines have gone up significantly in value. So have 3.2's 3.0's 2.7's the whole lot. If you could buy IB's for £15k 10-15 years ago and a used engine then would cost maybe £3k then if the cars value has tripled to £45k then why be surprised that the engine value has too. I think that there is a trend for people tend to want their cars as original as possible or modify also want to shoehorn in a big engine into a backdate to make their own Singer-esque cars. Bottom line - You can't have your cake and eat it. Not too many IB owners complaining much their car is worth now when they come to sell it. What has changed is the people buying them and the negative aspects such as insurance hikes, spares/upgrade parts price hikes and some specialist prices riding the crest of the wave for their services..... Having said that, BS motorsport asking £18k for that is very hopeful. Yes, the condition was a gamble, despite doing a leakdown test. With luck it's turned out to be a strong lump making 303bhp which is marginally more than most standard Varioram engines do on Wayne's dyno. £18k for an outwardly rough looking 964 that is sold as seen with no warranty seems bonkers to me. I've been watching this and $5000 / £3780 is pretty reasonable considering the outlay and effort involved in producing the final product. I can see a lot of engine builders speccing big money builds using this, not so much you 964 backdates but particularly for earlier cars who's owners want more puff than the smaller displacement engines could ever make and finding used 3.6's is getting harder and harder. It would be fun to make up your own wish list using this as your base then GT3 crank, 3.8 / 4.0 P&C's...... Let your imagination and wallet run riot!
