Bought a 1993 Mercedes R129 500 SL

Recommended Posts

Those performance numbers look very conservative John but the SL isn't about outright numbers, it's forte is adding speed with minimum effort and here the 500 wins hands down over the rather anemic six cylinder cars.  I would guess most cars spend 95% of time being driven below 2000 rpm such is the torque available but its important to use the revs when the opportunity comes as like any multi valve engines they love revs. The odd Italian tune up is good!

Well yes, butt dyno says they may be more but that might just be good old fashioned fear talking and being 3.2 quick is quick enough. Within a week of buying mine, I had done 2 tanks of fuel on night drives and I hadn't done that for many years...

They are truly fantastic cars. My dad picked up one a few years ago, had to go with the 300 because my mum doesn't drive automatics.

I hope so, like a fat kid on a slice of cake 😁

Seem to be plenty about for sale at the moment, not that I've ever looked before though

The good thing is that there are plenty around which means the prices shouldn’t ever go stupid except for the limited editions

The pics in the ad are pretty bad , he sent videos of the hood going up and down and pics of the underneath plus wherever I asked of , I got it for £12500 , which when looking at the prices asked for good ones is ace

A sign of the times, maybe?

Think luxury toy prices are going to take a hammering so I guess the dealer thought a smaller profit is better than no profit

Agreed with that mileage, great buy.

Agree, crazy value for money, especially when looking at R107 prices.

I think his stock profile says it all - this is/was the best buy on the website and probably underpriced. Those with a better stock mix report that sales are happening and prices are not sinking too hard. I think decent traders who have been around a while are now having a deal and adding to their war chests in the hope that there will be some rarer cars coming through later in the year.

Low supply of good SLs like this will keep prices steady, but there was always going to be a deal on the table from someone who is not a Merc specialist and has a bunch of expensive ornaments clogging up the balance sheet. This at a Merc specialist would likely have been up for a chunk more and probably sold overseas.

Well done, cars like that and low miles are in short supply these days. Looks identical to my 97 apart different colour leather interior. Mine has been super reliable. They cost very little to service and most parts are easy accessible and cheap. I would get a good indy to give it a once over underneath, check bushes and anti roll bar/steering for any play, same for the propshaft donuts if there is any vibration at speed.  Engine pads can make a mess if they disintegrate. The pano roof feels like a ton weight!
