Buying a new battery

Philip

Recommended Posts

I am about to replace my 12v Bosch Silver 6F 66Ah battery in a 911SC 1980 Targa.

Would the Bosch S4 (72Ah and 680 cold cranking) be a good choice? Or would an S3 (70Ah and 640 cold cranking) be enough?

Any other better recommendations?

JCB are the cheapest in my experience (Just Car Batteries, not the yellow diggers)

Thanks for the lead - great prices!

Just bought a Varta Silver Dynamic 77AH / 780 CCA - £68.75 delivered.

Many thanks for all the help/advice. I have finally got round to ordering a Bosch S5 from JCB.

Its a bit of an 'upgrade' from my old Bosch discontinued battery and they extra cold cranking will be welcome I suppose.

Thanks again and apologies for not coming back to this thread for 6 weeks!!

Just dragging this up as I needed a new battery so order the above Varta unit from JCB. Still £68.75, ordered Sunday and arrived yesterday so spot on. Unwrapped it this morning to install and found I have been sent a Bosch Silver S5, so I am guessing they are both basically the same as they are under the same ownership. Oddly the Bosch unit is an extra £10 according to the JCB website and looks identical apart from the branding, I didn't get charged anymore. So if you want a Bosch Silver S5 order the Varta version and you might get lucky.

Tis cheap indeed - I'll investigate their AGM options as mine discharges after 14d or so with alarm armed (no power in lockup). AGM can handle discharge/recharge much better than lead acid - mine still strong after 8 years and being flattened (<5v) at least 10-15 times

Yup, the battery that it's replaced ( Bosch Silver 66AH) was in the car when I bought it nearly 10 years ago. In that time it's been flattened multiple times, overcharged, shorted and generally abused. I think it's lasted rather well all things considering. Hope it's replacement can take the same amount of abuse. Though I think I'll invest in a CTEK conditioner.

Nige, by "general abuse" i do hope that you are not still "accidentally" shorting the terminals across various parts of your own person? This will void the warranty I suspect.

OK slightly different electrical loads and duty cycles but I have to say the old adage about Porsches preferring Bosch batteries has been proved on the Cayenne with a lesser battery dying after 18 months and a new S5 transforming the cold starts. If you're staying big then I think stay Bosch - Euro Car Parts are well priced via their eBay store and most of us are close to a branch. I paid £80 for the Cayenne battery.

Good morning all.

"Dragging up this thread" (as Nige did earlier) for the same reason: mine's died and needs replacement ('83 SC).

There is much interesting discussion elsewhere on the forum about lightweight batteries, lithium, batteries from motorised wheelchairs (I enjoyed that), etc, but I have not (yet) found a thread that brings it all together.

So I was wondering whether the advice above still stands all these years later?  Is Bosch still the one to have, and the S4 a minimum?

Is the AGM option still going strong and recommended for these cars?

My local specialist advised that AGM are designed for stop-start engines so not approrpriate, but there seem plenty of users both here and on Pelican Parts.  Any opinions on this?

Have the lighter-weight options become better/defined?

Basically, I could do a straight swap but am wondering whether there is a neat upgrade (mostly but not only thinking of weight) to be had without risk or huge cost?

Thanks in advance.

Jack

I still have the same battery that I installed in 2016, it still gets used and abused across my nipples.

I rarely put it on any conditioning charge, just gets left as is over winter.

AGM batteries have been around since before stop start so that’s a load of bunkum.

Nearly all batteries are guaranteed for three years now so I just go for the right size at the best price, which normally works out as Halfords. It’s a consumable item, look after it and it will last years.

The novelty of a lightweight golf cart battery wore a bit thin for me, as I found the only way I could be sure it would still start when I needed it to was to disconnect it every single time.

If you are a member, buy a Bosch battery from Costco, 5 year no-quibble guarantee. Take it back for a new one every 4 years 11 months!

I too have given up on the super-light golf cart battery. However 12v lead acid batterys come in all sizes, for both my cars I have chosen a small sized version with the correct terminals. CCA is more than enough, absolute Ah capacity immaterial in my case.

1 hour ago, Ian Comerford said:

Bosch batteries are not as good as they used to be

Very true, Bosch sold on the brand many years ago, same true for Varta. All now made in a generic factory in China.

Yuasa are the best batteries these days and they are the manufacturer behind new car fitments (and I suspect Halfords own brand).

Search on here for my username and "Yuasa".

I have been using one of their "light weight" mobility scooter batteries in my 3.2 for years without problems.

I also use a normal size (although smaller than the regular SC boat anchor) Yuasa in the SC. Again, no problems for years.
