Update: crank is all good and polished, barrels not within spec so sourcing a good used set of Mahle B&P's. Wossner conrods not available anymore. Which is pants. :(

New valve guides fitted and seats recut. Fitted new oem springs, shafts, rocker arms, titanium retainers and also machined the cylinder head faces. 3 pieces of tinware replaced, rest is at the powder coaters.

Really ? on a rebuild ? is that wise ?

Can you hone out of spec cylinders into 98mm and buy appropriate wossner or JE Pistons?

Now I'm back, it's update time and some blingy goodness for y'alls:

Intakes have been honed and modified, waiting for the cams to arrive and the crank is still at the machine shop waiting for the rods/flywheel/clutch to go on for balancing. Waiting for the B&P's to be available - not going for the 3.4's as they require a different intake system etc, so it'll be 3.2 Mahles..

Interesting , not heard that before . Were they talking ITB etc?

Rest of it looks good - did you find some usable p and c's?

Yup, PMO's or similar, to get the correct mixture swirl.

Used P&C's were no good, so waiting for Mahle to make some more...

I wouldn't say 3.4 conversion necessitates a different intake system. I'm sure ITBs or PMOs will get more from a 3.4 upgrade than the standard intake but they'll get more from a standard 3.2 too...

I don't know about these things: only repeating what GCR said to me

If you're having to fork out for new P's & C's anyway why not get a displacement increase by going to 3.4 ? Can't be much difference in price Shirley ?

Shirish has all the info on this I'm sure.

100% agree - I think Matt )max diesel has found a cheaper price than fvd.de for the 3.4 kit.

IMO It's a no brainer if p and c need changing AND you're planning to keep hold of the car - at my time of purchase there was a £700 pound difference between 95 and 98 mm Mahle kits - £700 over 6yr ownership since purchase doesn't amount to much

This ^^^^^^. If the Max Moritz pistons had been available when I had my SC engine rebuild I'd have gone 3.2 s/s in a heartbeat !

Ho ho TwinTub

Point still stands though. Crazy to just rebuild stock if you're having to buy new P's and C's IMO

You hankering after a 3.2 Gary?

Think about all the lost zing :P

I agree Gary. Deffo a worthy "whilst you're in there and spending the money" upgrade and as Shirish points out, over the typical ownership of the car it netts out to maybe a few hundred quid a year max, less in Doc's case as I suspect this is a keeper.

Short stroke Alex so all SC zinginess would have been retained :) Edited by GaryH
