I thought I'd struck paydirt (or perhaps poodirt) when a brown 3 spoke wheel came up on here. I thought all SC wheels were black. Well, I think I was right as it turned out to have the smaller 924/944 splines so it didn't fit. At this point I contacted the seller (who had been sold the wheel as for a 911) and he kindly agreed to refund me some cash. It makes no sense but 924/944 wheels are a whole lot cheaper than 911 ones - typically £100 on ebay.

So, what to do? Genuine 911 wheels are expensive so I needed another option so read that the 928 has the same splines. I bought this really scruffy 928 wheel of ebay for £45 and set about dismantling it:

First I drilled out the 4 steel rivets that hold the splined 'basket' to the wheel and removed it:

Did the same on the 911 wheel:

I then used M6 bolts and spring washers to secure the 928 basket to the 911 wheel.

I had to swap over the cancelling mechanism and make sure it was in the right place (the raised bit on the left). (The 928 one is oriented differently)

The basket It is exactly the same size and depth and all the trim parts fitted on the wheel. There is a foam gasket that you can see above that the 911 trim needs to prevent it rattling I guess but it all went together just fine.

Here it is fitted in the car. Matches perfectly with all the other brown:

So there you have it. A 'limited edition' custom brown wheel for £145.

What has happened about the wooden wheel?

It got cold so I had to use it for firewood. Edited by Jonny Hart

that's odd. the four spoke that was on my 83 SC cab when I bought it fit straight onto my 89 944 S2 without and modifications.

Not as odd as that!

^ Yup.

I only noticed this some time later but the round plastic cover that hides the boss behind the wheel must be slight smaller diameter on a 924 .  This means that it doesn’t perfectly match the round on the stalk cover.  There’s maybe a 2mm gap.  TBH you would struggle to notice this unless pointed out.
