Electric Air Conditioning. Will it work?

I'm sure you have comtemplated it, but I'll mention it anyway.

There is a lot of wasted space behind the front seats which is normally never used, perhaps some sort of compartment that uses the rear footwell and/or seat areas.

Little A/C update.

Well I stuck it in, then I took it out, in, out, in, out, in, out. repeat.

While it was out, I weighed the entire system. 12 kg! Less than half the factory system.

The large washer bottle gets deleted, replaced by the condenser and fan. I weighed the large washer bottle full of water, it's a stonking 10kg. Moving to the intensive system must save at least half that weight I would imagine, if not more.

So, for a normal IB with a full washer bottle, putting the aircon will only result in ~7kg added weight. The total pipe run length is 4m, less than a third of the factory hose length.

Here are all the major components for the prototype kit:

Bit sensitive about the 'clever' bit, hence blur. Sorry.

Btw, here's Tuthill's effort on Chris Harris' 911. Seriously???

In the video, he does say it will get refined. Wonder if they ever did that?

  • 4 weeks later...

General availability will be next Spring for a complete turn key retrofit kit.

We are taking deposits now for those with cars in build on the basis that the main system components can be mounted, but the control system electronics are still being worked on so wont be ready for a couple of months.

27 degrees C (80 degrees F) in the shade here and quite muggy. Vent temps around 12 degrees C today. Still, a nice cool breeze on your face and feet. The compressor is running at lowest speed currently. It is likely that the SC and earlier car systems will need an uprated alternator for hot climates. Then, we can crank the compressor up.

Cabin cooled to 22 degrees after a few minutes.

BenC, interested to know how your 993 system performs in today's conditions.

Anyone else with a 964, 993 or IB with air con? How's it doing today?
