If your Indie has stated it doesn't need rebuilding I'm assuming they've done some checks before arriving at this conclusion!

Just their knowledge of my car over the last 8 years or so

Most just do it the old fashioned way - seat of pants & exhaust smoke (or lack of it).
hope not, could just be overfilled or blocked breather

Not overfilled, will need to check the breather, is that a DIY able?

That's what I got from the fellow you've booked yours in with!

Mine's not booked in with anybody but assume you mean Neil @ BS ?

 

I'd expect a comp test and leakdown as a minimum, both undertaken on mine.

With the leakdown figures I'd also want details about if it's valves or rings leaking

Would a leak down test be able to ascertain whether its rings or values I assumed that could only be seen once open

Yes, you can hear the leak in most cases - through oil tank cap or exhaust pipe
