1974 911 Restoration

Hi all, Well I thought it was time to show the progress on my restoration 911.
A bit of back ground info... I've owned in the past a 1966 912 and a 89 3.2 Targa, both great cars but used very little so I thought I would buy a project :doh2:

Just to warn anyone thinking of restoring a Porsche make sure you have large pockets!!!

Anyway, this is the first time I saw it, the engine and box had been removed (but still came with the car) and a lot of parts had been "borrowed" from it.

What made me want to restore this car?

Well in my opinion I think its a rare narrow bodied 74 911, the original colour is Sahara Beige RHD with matching engine and box, a sunroof and running on cookie cutters, built in 1973 and as I found out later running a lot of the parts from the pre-impact model.

After I removed every part left on the car

I decided to have it striped by Envrio-strip...that`s when the nightmare started.

This is how it came back

After assessing the body work I made a list of new parts needed,

o/s front inner wing,

n/s front inner wing,

a complete new roof with sunroof, (the existing sunroof hand been covered over and chopped around),

o/s and n/s narrow body rear wings,

Complete new floor,

Inner and outer sills,

Tank support,

Battery support,

Front cross panel,

Longitude/wheel housing repair sections.

They were the main parts but other bits along the build were needed.

All parts that were available from Porsche I ordered at my local dealer, the other parts I sourced from various places like Roger Bray, Rose Passion and the like.

It had a become a major build now beyond my scope so I sent the whole lot away to leave that bit to the experts.

Now the body was away it was time to work my magic on the parts that were left.

I started with the rear axle trailing arms, this is how they came off..

I have a sand blaster at work and also brought a plating kit, what was salvageable I reused if not good enough I replaced.

The worst part of this refurb was replacing the bearings by heating up the arm and freezing the bearings, here is the finished product.

The plating kit I used was this one http://www.classic-plating.co.uk/images/Zinc%20-%20Pro.JPG

The A frames were powered coated, the front struts were spray painted at my local spray booth.

Here is the steering rack,

Turbo tie rod kit was used on the rack.

Many thanks. Looks like a good kit. Great gearshift restoration too :) Unfortunately, I don't have a local powder coater so I'm going for the prime & paint option on pretty much everything. Not as durable but it speeds up the process and I like painting bits.

Hi Mark, lot of work going on there, I think I got off very lightly with mine.

you say narrow bodies are rare, are they ?

who is doing the welding as I see a few VWs in there too, it's what I used to do, restore buses.

Yes you do need big pockets, yours much be huge...

HI Ron, thanks for the comments, do I think narrow bodies are rare? it depends which way you look at it, I meant the whole package, RHD 74 base model in Sahara beige (it would be nice to know if any one has one in same colour same spec).

A guy in Northampton is carrying out the work, as you can see his main business is VW vans and Beetles.

Inner rear wings repaired.
