Wont be ready for Xmas, but progress at least.

Potential intake height issues to be addressed.  I actually thought we’d be using a 993 airbox arrangement to complement the 993/996 intake stacks, but it appears Neil had other ideas and gone bespoke (I like it); it should look good once all anodised black.

Fenn Lane fan strap making a belated showing some 4 or so years after buying.

Hi Shirish, for us unwashed and uneducated folks, why is using a 933 plenum better than straight through trumpets?

Posted

I believe the theory is the plenum provides a readily available dollop of air at all engine speeds, which enhances speed of combustion, resulting in added oomph.

It’s not black and white though, I’ve seen posts by those running trumpets, showing very healthy ‘areas under the torque curve’.

Look up posts by rsscotty in Pelican, he works for or represents Rothsport who I think developed the ITB/plenum setup.

Hi Shirish

If it's any consolation, I won't get my engine on the dyno until the New Year either!

Mine definitely won't be as trick and targas (I've always like targas) weigh quite a bit more, but I'm still hoping for a decent bump in performance and fun from the warmed over motor and the stripped out diet.  I've attached some pics for anyone that might be interested.

Have a great break and hope to catch up in the NY.

John

Engine looks bloody go Shirish. Hope you get it back soon. Put a deadline on him with a ‘reward’ for completing on time - He’s had that engine a looooong time!

John the black and gold looks great. Channeling the JPS 👍

Deadlines are a waste of time with Neil, Lewis - makes no difference whatsoever

Hard luck John, was hoping you’d be done by now, guess mine won’t be done until yours is.

Your car worth a thread of its own i reckon - short stroke 3.2, pmos, etc

He seemed to get through Mike Moore’s RSR build quick enough. It’s just priorities.

Get some pressure on him!

As per what Lewis said, think I would be threatening legal action by now if someone had my engine for a year, that’s not right no matter his reputation. :smash:

Hope you get it back soon. :)

Thanks Northy - I'm definitely going for a 70's bling look!! :-) I've got a couple of pictures of the starting point below.

Shirish, I did most of the strip down and I'll do the suspension and interior, but I'm getting others to do the rest, so didn't think it was thread-worthy!  Also, although Neil's doing the build, to be fair to him, most of the delays on my engine were down to faults revealed in the strip-down (see the rockers below) and to long lead-times on some key parts (finding the heads, the distributor, etc).

As to how well it will all work in the end, the specification has been home-brewed by me (in combination with the old Bruce Anderson book) and is broadly as follows -  twin-plug, large port 3.0 Carrera heads with new valves, race springs & retainers, Carrillo pistons, Nickie cylinders (with half moon cut-outs), Solex ('66) profile camshafts, 46 PMOs, JB Racing 12 plug distributor, Classic Retrofit ignition, 964 oil pump, gas-flowed crankcase, ARP bolts, RS flywheel, SSIs with a 2:1 sport muffler, etc. The gearbox ratios and LSD ramp angles will wait until we see how the engine looks on the dyno but will have an OS Giken LSD.

Very nice John!  ‘Obvs’ the biggest difference will be from using my old crank  :)

A better description, from a Kit using a Gt3 plenum (considered too big for anything smaller than a 3.6)

https://www.fvd.net/us-en/FVD110900011/individual-throttle-body-kit-magnesium-for-mass-air-flow-sensor-street.html

“This kit keeps air consistently on tap. When the throttle is opened, there is an instant injection of air, providing a sharp, crisp throttle response. This efficient injection frees up more power and compliments larger displacements, high lift cams (up to 5 mm) and full exhaust systems”

And some argue that its only worthwhile if done on a 3.8

So a year has passed since droppping off the car. Neil could see I was getting animated so told me to de-stress by taking out a customers car for a spin.

It went well but I felt the limited kicked in too soon:

Haha, and that was just cooling down on the way back right?

Crikey SP - a whole year  I know that you're having a really nice spec engine built but why a year? Waiting for new development parts?

Has he given you a clear path and timeframe to finish the project off now that you've vented?

He thinks it’ll be done in the next week or two. He missed the Xmas deadline and looks like he’ll miss my birthday deadline too.  Doesn’t sound like he’s far away, though from getting it on the dyno, now he’s sorted an intake height issue.

Reasons? Seem to be a few, some personal (close friend bereavements x3),  shoulder injury and some sub-contractor quality issues.

Its been tough reading about various IB meets and get togethers last year, I’m determined to join some this year.

Have a pic of the anodised filter T piece to keep you going:

:kickrock:

It should have been on the rollers week before last, he’s now committed to an end March completion.

The engine carrier bar and new CS mounts should be with him on Friday.

I must be bored as I found a pair of NLA used ‘heet sheets’ on eBay http://www.seinesystems.com/faqs-3.htm

Hoping that together with the Ceramic coated SSIs they’ll help lower engine temps near the valve covers.

Just need a ‘cool collar’ and a front bumper trim oil cooler infill and my life will be complete.

On the rollers or on the engine dyno?

What was wrong with the old engine bar & mounts? Can't you just run-in with them and switch them later on? It's not a big job.

Sounds like he's stalling - crack the whip SP!!!

Engine dyno

Nowt wrong with the old parts but that’s not holding up the dyno session.

At this rate you'll soon need to convert it to battery power to be able to drive in the UK...............................:ninja:!

Scrub that - just received the estimate for job completion - I can no longer afford to use his engine Dyno.

Put this into context, I could buy a minty 996c4s with the amount this will end up costing

Well It’s going straight into storage when I get it back, who knows when it’ll be driven!
