Rear torsion bar stuck!

If you are keeping the torsion bar be careful that you don't damage the surface of the bar with careless use of a vice etc, it can lead to the bar breaking in use.  Stand it on its end and get plenty of Plus Gas  or Rost Off in there, allow to soak overnight and then a few sharp taps should drive it out of the arm

Trouble with that Ian is to be able to stand the bar on end you would have to get the attached springplate / bar out first :)

Cutting as leicestershire says can save a world of pain especially as you can end up damaging wing /paint in trying to separate . Would be well worth just pulling bars out both splines and re greasing if you happen to doing kidneys and have easy access.

If not wishing to cut tortion bar you could try  removing cap on end of spring plate by  drilling or grinding slot of protective cap /welsh washer and lever out then heat spring plate ideally with acetylin then try and drift bar out with long drift bar using a packer between other side of spring plate and car body .

Good luck !

Am not an expert but had similar problem when replacing bushes. Took to Chris at Center of Gravity who rigged up contraption to seperate after first attempt proved difficult to get free.  Attached some pictures that might help, but he did an excellent job and may be able to help.

Oh dear - as Henry pointed out, you can drill and pry out the end cap to the torsion bar cover and then drive out the torsion bar.....oh well at least you can get some nice new shiney spring plates!

Cheers,

No,it was well and truly stuck in. I did try that method and it just wouldn't budge!

Yes, nice new pair of spring plates ordered.

Still looking for a 20mm rear anti-roll bar, if anyone has one spare? but that won't stop the rebuild.

Cutting tortion bar itself may have been cheaper , good job to get out the way as consolation.      When I upgraded  from 18mm rear bar    I just bought a 21mm brand new from OPC  aroud £130 IIRC cheaper than expected .
