more surface area the better a heat sink works

a solid thermal mass will only get you so far

Yeah. I've bought a heatsink for a power transistor. 160x100x35. Flat top, finned bottom. If that doesn't work then the car can set on fire.

They do get warm, if you cant mount it on a big tray like in Marks pic try to make sure it has plenty of air gaps all around it. I also used some CPU paste on mine to help transfer heat from the module to the heat sink.

As promised, some dimensions of the std 993 item.

40mm x 70mm x 8mm.

Some more pictures, including underside fixing...

Cheers guys, appreciate the pics and advice. My bit of ally doesn't look much thinner than the one pictured. I shaved off the plastic pegs and used some thermal paste to help. The whole block gets too hot to handle after 15 minutes driving. I've ordered one of the heatsinks in the picture to do the job properly. Probably overkill, but I don't like being stranded for nothing.

I'm going to have to order a voltage regulator for the alternator. See if that sorts my dim battery warning light issue.

Is there room to add a small computer fan on top of the fins to help with cooling ?

Went to see Wayne the Wizard today. 303bhp, which is nice. The car really pulls well and throughout the range too. Really pleased with it.

Thanks guys. In fairness, I've not updated the thread as often as I should. For others, it's not just a case of throwing it in and driving into the sunset, but I'm sure there are threads from more dedicated IBers which list the pitfalls, some of which my mechanic overcame, some of which I have.

The fact is, however, that once the quibbles are behind you it's probably the easiest way to a 300bhp IB and with the reliability of an engine that Porsche had finally got totally right.
