Hidden aerial options?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

As per thread below about aerial, I'd like to leave, mine where it is but basically never pull it up so I need options for an alternative setup.

Shame I didn't accept that screen with the built in aerial that National Windscreens brought by mistake (964 screen?)...too late now!

So, been reading up a bit and the only ones that seem to work are the ones that stick to the inside of the screen. Anything in the scuttle or under metal won't work apparently.

Anyone had to solve this problem?

  • 2 weeks later...

Ages ago I had an Ford Escort-type car, used the heated rear window as the aerial, so I bought a spare module but it is still sitting in the box.  Must get round to using it.  I have a Halfords aerial that sticks inside the windscreen but it is fairly useless.

Can't hear the radio anyway since I re-covered the Targa  roof and left the front lip sticking up too much.

I plan to ditch my wing mounted ariel and use a head unit with bluetooth so I can stream either music or a radio app from my phone.

I've done this.  Head unit also has a USB, so I have option to hard wire and charge phone if needed.

I'm half-way there, with a bluetooth hands free visor unit that then sends an FM signal so I can play music from phone via radio.

So want to keep my original head unit and have some level of reception to at least pick up signal from FM transmitter.

I'm going to trial an amplified unit that can go under the dashboard - would I be right in saying that an '83 IB still has the space in the metal dash where the dash mounted speaker was located on pre-'73 cars or was it gone by then?  Car is not here so haven't been able to check but hopefully when I take out one of the instruments I will be able to see a hole under the dash.  If it's there I will just locate the unit under the dash top which shouldn't block the signal.

Something like this is the way forward.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B06XZ3W5SH/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1517584115&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=bluetooth+adapter+for+car+stereo

I have used an FM transmitter for years but one that plugs into the phone. This seems very good with Bluetooth, hands free, FM transmission and USB outs as well.

Tried something like that before Phil - the cigarette lighter socket on my SC was to shallow for it to get much of a bite and it wobbled about. Plus the sound was bloody awful so I sent it back. And it was a half decent brand.
