Little bit more progress, welding on the drivers side window frame is just about done, just noticed ive missed a bit!

Quite an awkward little repair this one, just a coat of etch primer So minimal filler will be needed👍

on a +ve the other side is nowhere near as bad, this will just need a small patch!

When you cut and weld, what happens to the seams below the panel (on the reverse side)? They remain like the unfinished part at the top? (before you grind the excess out i mean)

It depends where it is, for example the floor pan i could get at both sides so i tidied it up but didnt grind fully back, the inner wings again i left some weld showing, the outer panels im grinding flush so it looks nice. The other side should look something like this (i couldnt find a pic from behind but middle pic pinched from the web). F228CC82-276F-4255-AE19-B1D1E853EFCF.jpeg.7949b6d55ef94ab4696746a816d2ddb3.jpeg

Where i can get access to the back i am treating the metal with fe123 then paint and dynax if its a box section then dynax S50 is injected in to protect it👍

Your work is amazing. If there is no rust do you need to use fe123 as I think it needs rust present to convert.

Thanks!!

Probably not but i just worry that there might be some rust hiding in there somewhere!!
Ive actually been using Vactan by Paco (the manufacturers) recently as i am convinced its the same stuff, comes in same bottle, looks and works the same etc but half the price!

Good to see you went with new panels in the end. Look forward to seeing them in place on the car, keep up the great work.👍

Yes, once i got over paying the £1100 I'm glad i did!!  The old one would never have been good enough.

A bit more patching and finishing off this week, front window surround finished on both sides.  It needed a few more patches on the driver side and given a coat of epoxy mastic.

Now ive got the new rear 1/4 i can see where i needed to cut out more of the rear, unsurprisingly now i found some more rust so another couple of patches

2 more patches needed here, at least i could see into all the box sections and the rest looks good👍

Pleased with the rear wing, looks like its a reasonable fit, much, much better than i was getting using the cut up bits so hopefully not much fettling to get it fitting properly👍

Great stuff, really coming together now. Can I suggest that at the point where the rear qtr meets the the sill, that you seam weld it rather than plug weld as it's a major stress point on targa's. The joint will be covered with lead or filler anyway but you don't want a stress crack showing through your new paint.

Top work👍

Thanks both, yes i was planning on seam welding, just using those holes to line it up with self tappers👍
Im planning on using some sort of filler rather than lead loading, just for ease. Hopefully just a skim if i can get the welds neat enough!

Its been a bit cold to get out in the garage🥶 so for a bit of a change ive been playing with the interior....

I was never keen on the burgundy and it was quite faded and rough looking so i thought while the dash is out i might as well go for a colour change. I was planning on covering it but tried to dye it first. Quite pleased with the results!

This stuff (below) I tried it on a pair of the Mrs boots first and it seemed ok, i will report back on how well it wears, degreased everything with white spirit!!

Compressor looks great but was damaged on arrival, they are sending out replacement bits so i can fix it myself... easier than returning it.  It also tripped the elecy when i tried it so i need to up-rate the mcb!!

Also checked with Porsche and they used a single layer paint process for GP White until 1993!!  Some good info in the attached link, 1972 onwards

Bloody ell ive a new found respect for bodyshops.... at least ones that do it right anyway!  The rear 1/4 has been on and off about 50 times this week and ive finally got it so I'm fairly happy!  Still bolted in place while i decide if im finally happy....

then loads of fettling, started at the back but couldnt get the middle right, so restarted in the middle and worked out.  Much better👍

boot was a bit proud and the gap along the top was uneven, the boot only has one strut pushing it open which twists the frame. I ended up moving it back on the hinge a bit. I think there were originally 2 struts but without the spoiler it nearly knocked my teeth out when it shot open. I need to do something about this....

Numbers in red are what ive ended up with

Originally before sill replacement i had 5.3mm - 4.25mm, so much better.  I think i will go with this, i can probably open up the 3.2 a bit with some persuasion once its all welded??

Im not sure if i am getting a bit picky, after watching home built by Geoff he smothered everything with a skim of filler to get his gaps exact 🤔 Im still trying to avoid that if i can but wondering whether im just fannying about??

With all other parts of the rear qtr secured, there should be enough 'flex' on the panel to push the sill/b post joint backwards slightly to get the gap you want on the lower curve of the door. Also check your outer sill panel where it runs across the rear qtr to make sure the panel isn't kinked inwards at that point.

Trial fitment is laborious but well worth the time and effort. :signs85:

This side is better than the last one but even more annoying!! Again they used all new genuine porsche panels but put them over the old inner sill... if they had done the inner sill as well it could have been a decent job!
So inner and outer sill, kidney bowl, targa support, torsion repair and new rear wing needed 😳

Typical bodged repair and all too common sadly. I bet you'll fix this side far more quickly now you're familiar with all the panel junctions and fit. Great work as usual👍

No updates for a while but i have been cracking on!! I thought i had got lucky, the front of the rhs sill was much better than the lhs but as i worked my way back the floor and torsion area still needed repairs!

Outer floor is now done and front area.  I need to really push on now its only 17 weeks until LMC.... if i can get the welding finished, a coat of paint and the windows in....
