16x8 vs. 16x9 rears

Hey guys, searched and didn't see a thread on this. Maybe I missed it.

My car is an '85 Euro spec 3.2 with 16x6 front and 16x7 rears. I'd like to eventually get a set of 15" wheels but for right now I wanted to also try a set of 16's.

What I was thinking was to move the 16x7's that are currently on the rear to the front and buy a pair of either 16x8 or 16x9 rears.

One note, my car came with new tires so I am wanting to use them but the sizes are 205/55 front and 225/50 rear. To me, this means I need a 16x8 rear to fit "correctly" but I know guys run 225/50 on 9" rears successfully. My question is, from a dynamic perspective is one size preferable to another (meaning the 16x8 vs 16x9 rears)? Also, I believe they will look the same from the outside as the additional inch is on the inner portion of the wheels so looks should be equivalent correct?

Just trying to pin this all down before I pull the trigger on the rears. Appreciate any advice or feedback you may have, thank you.

Maybe the sizes that came from factory can help:

SC 16": 6Jx16 front / 7Jx16 rear

SC RS: 7Jx16 front / 8Jx16 rear

Carrera 3.2 16" up to MY88: 6Jx16 front / 7Jx16 rear

Carrera 3.2 Club Sport: 6Jx16 front / 8Jx16 rear

For the 6, 7 and 8" Fuchs the ET is such that it is the *inner* edge of the wheel that remains in place and any growth is towards the outside.

Is that correct - to be honest I can't quite get my head around the chart listing all the Fuchs wheels and where they sit on the hub relative to each other?

I have 16" 7&8s on mine. Got them refurbed by Nick Moss at early911. I originally though that on a 9" wheel the entire extra inch was on the inside, but I seem to recall someone putting me right and saying there was a few mm on the outside too. I stuck with 205s and 225s for the tyres, they don't look stretched to me. Just don't buy the 944 8" Fuchs as these don't have the deeper dish of the 911 ones. Here's a gratuitous shot of my 8".

Carrera CS followed the standard Carrera in terms of wheel size, eg the my87 cars came with 6 and 7s - the run out my88 cars came with 6 and 8s

I have 16x9 on the back of my narrow arch car, with 10mm spacers! I am not sure how it fits under the arch to be honest.

225 section S02s they don't look stretched. I'd take a photo but the car is in the shop! It amazes me how much variation in width there is for tyres that are officially the same size.

That's quite some going to get those to fit into a standard narrow body car with 10mm spacers. My 8s with no spacers and 225s are close. Very close when you look at it on the rollers on a full power run with the arrrr5e squatting right down.

Same 10mm spacer on the blue IB but with 245 rear tyres, was more a visual thing for me to balance up with the 951 8's on the front which site further outboard.

Toe and camber settings make a big difference here.

It's not the proximity to the lip that is a potential issue, it's higher up in the arch...

This is with 16x9 + 6mm spacers and 245/45 track tyres and a fair amount of camber. It only happens at Brands hatch, going into the dip at the bottom of the slope after Paddock Hill bend.

I tried it without the spacers and it still happened, just a bit more patina

If you look at the plot above for the 6, 7 & 8 x 16 wheels, the inner edge of the 911 tyres stays roughly in the same place. Another way to look at it is by looking at the ETs: they reduce by about half an inch for every inch of width increase.

I didn't know that. Thanks for pointing it out.

Beautiful, looks spot on. Any pics of other angles you could post?

I am amazed that fits, pics when you get it back please :)

If anyone has experience with both widths, did you notice any real difference between the two in terms of driving dynamics?

Also, it seems from everything I have read in here that 16x8 might be the easiest to do and there are no obvious drawbacks in terms of fitting and they look great whereas 16x9 may be more difficult to fit in some respects but look a little wider/more aggressive? Anyone have 16x8 vs 16x9 wheel pics to compare the difference in look?

Thanks for all the help guys, this is a great forum!

16 x 7&9 here, R245x45 & F205x50.  I always thought 205x55 profile on the front look slightly fatter than the rears.  No clearance issues, I think the rear could stand 10mm spacers.

It's been that long since I swapped from 6&7s that I can't remember if the car felt different afterwards.  I'd imagine the difference would only be felt at the upper limits that you would really experience on a track.
