Help me choose a new system....

Recommended Posts

By far the worst part of my car (1988 Carrera Coupe) condition wise is the exhaust - I had to have it welded about a year ago as I couldn't afford to do anything else . Now I think I can stretch to sorting it out.

My plan is to replace the whole system from the exhaust ports. But what to buy? Must be stainless steel throughout, must keep the heat and must not be exceptionally loud or boomy. Oh, and single OE style outlet. A performance benefit would be nice but it's not why I am doing the work. Seems like pretty much everything I am looking at is in the £2.1k to 2.7k price bracket - at that level the price differences are almost irrelevant.

Could go Dansk OE style - but lots of comments I see relating to poor quality?

Eisenmann - better quality than Dansk(?) and a SSI type solution that works with the 3.2 heat?

Turbo Thomas - OE headers (but whose?) with TT piping and backbox, or their complete 'header' system with the heat boxes (too loud??)?

Anything else out there I should be looking at? I want this to be the only time I mess with the exhaust.....

Thoughts and opinions please!

All stainless, fit and forget. A little louder than standard but will release few more ponies, looks standard from anywhere but under the car.

Whatever you choose expect and plan for the worse on the exhaust studs.

But then if it's all being junked you can cut all the exhaust off leaving full access to the studs so you cut the nuts/barrel nuts off.

Thanks Guys.

Price not really the issue as I want to make the right decision as to what goes on - without going nuts.

I am planning on getting a local specialist to remove the existing system, including all the exhaust studs so I can just start anew.

So, am I wrong.? Is Dansk quality good?

I am advised that the Dansk SSI units are best in st/st for longevity, but the back box sounds better (less tinny) if mild rather than st/st.

This is generally accepted wisdom and has been discussed on here many times. If you go SS you can always wrap the box to prevent tinniness.

Get in touch with Andy Young, he’s just down the road from you and has the Eisenmann system fitted

Ian

Have dropped him a message. Remember some comments about fitting issues?

I am also interested in tracking down some larger diameter SSIs. They are I believe designed to get a bit more out of enlarged engines, like my 3.4, the regular ones being OK for an unmodified 3.2. I therefore MAY have a deal you might like; I have on my garage floor right now, 2 x genuine pre-Dansk 3.2 SSIs and a Dansk 2 in 1 out silencer. IF some larger diameter SSIs can be sourced, I would swap my whole system for enough money for me to buy 2 x larger diameter versions..... You would still need to buy oil pipe(s) and gaskets, but that is all.

Any interest? Chris.

Thanks - I'll bear it in mind Chris. Not convinced I'm going to go Dansk (especially the silencer) but plenty of thinking to do yet.

I'm not sure the larger diameter SSIs are available yet anyway, TT are BIG money, but it's there for you to think about.... Personally I've never had an issue with Dansk stuff on mine or anybody else's cars. I think it's more to do with mild Vs stainless steel, but unless somebody performs a back-to-back test we'll never 100% know.

Chris, I’m in exactly the same situation. I have managed to find some secondhand HEs in good condition. They come up for sale occasionally, and it’s a big saving. Maybe put something in the wanted section. Thereafter, I’ve decided to go Turbo Thomas for pre and rear mufflers. His reviews always seem positive. Sam

Right now I'm leaning towards SSI-type HEs. I'm interested in Turbo Thomas but his options seem to be more aimed at std HEs than SSIs .

Undecided re Dansk - the internet wavers between good quality and 'oh my god have you seen this'.

Eisenmann still an option but at the absolute max of what I could convince myself to spend. I'd need to be convinced that the fit, sound & quality are commensurate with the price. Right now I'm not sure.....

FYI, there is a thread on Pelican to get larger SSIs for 3.2s made. I don't know the current status as I am doing headers but you might look there before pulling the trigger on an undersized unit.
