“Bouncing” idle from cold start

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I’m sure you’ve probably covered this before but I can’t find it on the search.

My 85 3.2 has started bouncing on idle from about 800 - 1300 rpm from cold.

If I press the throttle gently to raise the rpm a bit it smooths out and then it idles fine.

I’ve replaced the ICV but it’s still the same.

Any ideas please?

Thanks in advance

Russ

what was the last time you have adjusted your fuel mix?

Do you have an air conditioner..If yes i can tell you how to adjust the c/o...i think your set up is too rich

Hi Ivan,

I’ve never touched the fuel mixture.

I’ve had the car 4 years now.

The car runs perfectly after I’ve settled the idle down and also when it’s warm.

It’s just passed its MOT with no adjustments needed.

Theres no AC.

Does that help? 😁

ok it sounds like a little vacuum leak.Put a socket on your intake manifold nuts and see if that helps. Also double check the clamps on the AFM booth..

ok

Hi Ivan,

So today was the first time I’ve had chance to have a look at it.

I wiggled the cylinder head temp sensor connector, tried all the hoses on the vacuum system, air filter, AFM looking for cracks and loose fittings. All good!

Got in the car, started it up and it was perfect!!

😳🤔

I started having similar issues on cold starts last year just before putting the car into hibernation. Will also need to try wiggling the connectors, but somehow guess that is only a temporary remedy.

Sorry, I should’ve updated this again.

It’s gone back to bouncing again, so I’m going to strip it down when I can and investigate deeper.

Seems very strange that wiggling the connectors seemed to sort it out. Albeit only temporarily.
