Cookie Cutter refurb

Phill

Recommended Posts

I have given up on the idea of buying new wheels for my car due to the cost of a decent set. So I have turned to the idea of refurbing my Cookies. I quite fancy the finish that Nick Moss gets on his cooling fans, au naturel and chromated.

Has anyone used any wheel refurbers in the South East?

I had my cookies refurbished at

http://www.lepsons.com/

and am very happy with the result. I also have a set of Fuchs but decided to go with the cookies because of the cost of refurbing the Fuchs.  The plan backfired slightly as the expense of tyres for the cookies used up most of the saving on refurb cost!

Hi Phill

If you are looking to get a colour change to alloy look then give Alex at Autoshine a call ..based in East Grinstead but is mobile so comes to you

I used him to refurb alloys on my Metc and was very pleased with results

Cost was not bad either

Thanks guys. Lepsons don't do anodising unfortunately. I want to try a slightly rough bare metal look chromated to a dark grey like Nick Moss's fans and shrouds. I spoke with a local company and they reckon they can do it for £100 per wheel. That's a phone quote mind you so I shall take them a wheel and see what they think.

Some progress.

Wheel dipped and blasted and anodised. Total cost so far £35.

I very much like the look but the anodiser says that if the blasting was finer it may look a little more even. However the blaster says it's as fine as he can go. The anodiser says they can get it finer. So the other 3 have gone to the blaster dipping and blasting to match the first and then the anodiser will give them a finer blast and then anodise. A work in progress but I like the way it's going. Not everyone's cup of tea I know and if it all goes wrong I have another set of wheels.

they are a little darker than the pictures suggest.

Sorry but is that correct? It is only £10 to anodise a wheel?

Looking at the prices some are charging to refurb Fuchs, I just assumed it would be a lot more !

How long does the anodising process take to complete i.e. could it done as a "while u wait"?

25 mins.

There are significant savings to be had by sourcing local companies who can do the work for you.

Don't forget though that a proper refurb will involve removal of blemishes, polishing etc none of which I have had done.

The guy that dipped and blasted my wheels charged £25 each. He does work for Nick Moss. Compare that to what Nick charges for a fan and housing refurb..........

The Porsche tax from "specialists" is huge.

Two reasons.

Firstly that is the colour of the metal and what I wanted, au naturel. It is clear anodising.

Secondly, I did ask if they could do a slightly darker grey but apparently the alloy will not take a dye. This is not twaddle as I am sure they would be happy to do it as many times as I am willing to pay for. For them to blast and re-anodise is £20 each time so not a big deal.

When you feel the wheels they have a slightly rough texture like 400 sand paper.

They are going to do it again as they say they can get a finger finish than my other blaster. It's all a big experiment.

1 hour ago, Busybee said:

but if they are anodised, why are they grey?

As well as what Phil says, remember they are a different alloy to Fuchs (so different base colour and they react to anodising a bit differently), and different construction to Fuchs (Fuchs are forged and Cookies are cast, adding another variable in the surface structure and how they look/react).

All four wheels done now. Vapour blasted, they are very much smoother than before. The guy went for as deep a grey as he could but this has brought out more of the imperfections in the alloy resulting in quite a mottled/speckled effect which I'm not entirely sure about. They look very different in different lights and from 6 feet away the effect is not as pronounced. They are deffo different now though!

Different lights and angles. Thoughts?

That well may be the case. As I mentioned earlier they did tell me that this alloy would not take a dye which probably has something to do with that.

I shall get a couple put on the car and see what they look like.
