2020 Alpine Road Trip

TC - are you seriously trying to defend this governments CV19 record (which is indefensible IMHO just for the record) in my Alps trip thread?  Take it somewhere else mate. And don’t start on your Brexit defence till we we have left the transition period either.  BTW I am still waiting for the sunlit uplands I was promised.

Richard, many apologies for what was perhaps an unnecessarily mischievous post and certainly out of place here, especially after the conciliatory tone of your earlier post. In fairness I think certain of us, (including you!) have over indulged in recent times regarding the inclusion of certain “hot topics” within general conversations in this friendly spirited forum.

Moving forward then I will certainly take Mark’s sage advice and avoid the temptation to be drawn into these ping pong exchanges.

On topic then I do hope that things open up soon to provide you and the other guys  on here Euro road-trip travel options in the not too distant future .

No hard feelings!

20 June 2015. Our first real day of a proper Alps trip. Somewhere not a million miles from Baden Baden and our first “someone got lost” moment. It might have been MJ but I wouldn’t swear to it.

Soon followed by another recurring theme - Fraser’s ice cream fetish.

No, I don’t think it was his birthday.

that Bavarian restaurant was great and the food (and beer!) was spot on. Where was that place? I loved the look of it inside and out, very traditional. I've wanted to go back there on my travels but forgot where it was.

Here is the crew with a friendly Munich interloper.

Baden Baden, right near the centre.  I could find it on a map.  It will be in the top few traditional restaurants on trip adviser.

I have the route files for each day of that trip but from memory we stayed the night before near Metz.  On the 20th itself we did a run up into Lux and across thru the Paltinate Forest before lunch in Baden Baden after lunch was the N500 and an overnight in southern Black Forest territory.  The next day (Fathers Day) was into Switzerland, the Klausen pass and overnight at Andermatt IIRC.  Lunch was in Hotel Flyhof in Weesen overlooking lake Wallensee which is just below Amden (day 1 overnight in the 2020 plan).  Might have to look up the details now that I start scratching around in my brain for what we did, where we went...

Let’s not worry about the details too much - photos tell the story. I remember going for a run morning of the 21st and making the mistake of doing an out and back where all the back was uphill. Anyhow...

I think the menu gives away that this was the Hulftegg pass. Wet and slippery cobbled hairpins added to the fun. Cake was good IIRC.

I think Klausen Pass was next after lunch on the way to Andermatt. We went thru the tunnel to Airolo and back over Gotthard Pass to Andermatt where it was pizza for dinner. Might have been some car cleaning in the morning by the more PCGB types. I recall parking mine over a kerb so I could lie on the ground with a spanner and try to tighten what sounded like a small exhaust leak from the manifold when cold. It was just that. I also recall a cow incident - another typical Alpine event.

BTW, photos may be a bit out of order.  Phone gets confused with photos shared on whatsapp later and so on.

Next day was the Andermatt circuit and all the legendary passes. Morning was Susten, Grimsel, Furka taking us back to Andermatt for lunch. Then Gotthard and Nufenen after lunch. Overnight was some Swiss town near the end of the Nufenen.

And I found the car washing evidence.

Town was Oberwald.

Next morning should have got us to Val d’Isere but we had an issue. And even after that was dealt with, we had a Lone Ranger who decided to do his own thing oblivious to the rest of us.

Can’t recall the abridged route but the day ended in Briancon and a walk into town for a very alpine meal. The Ibis provided the lodgings. Pics to follow.

what happened here leading to a flatbed?

The cause came from under here - a rock lodged under skid plate, escaped and broke the clutch actuating arm off MJ’s gearbox. Luckily a hotel and a Porsche dealer were found meaning only a day of lost play.

We are not above taking photos of petrol station sun shades and local ladies in see thru dresses. Apparently.

Also not above WhatsApp ing random photos so that they end up phone camera rolls that are shared with wives. We laughed and laughed.

The L511 - great road which is not much used!

It was deserted all across the Spanish Pyrenees. Means you are spoilt by the time you get to the Alps!

Its an indoor heated pool and there is also the sauna on the roof top with the panoramic window.  Its a really cool hotel with a nice central bar under a huge atrium in the middle of the hotel.  I called in there for a coffee and a tour around on the way back in September.  I can't vouch for the food, but the rest of it is great VFM.  I also skied on the German side of the Zugspitze in February.  It s really cool part of the world - highly recommend a visit.  I think the mountain biking is pretty good this time of year as well.

After Briancon we headed down to Grasse. A very serious accident meant that our route was impassable after we had done the epic col d’Izoard immediately post breakfast. It’s a great way to start the day. I can’t recall all the in between bits that we rerouted to but improvise, adapt, overcome is part of road trips.
We also learned the old tyres and high tyre pressures can be the cause of unexplained and worrying vibrations.  And that Porsche dealers are sometimes very helpful and good vfm. Even in Switzerland.
Quick panel repair on the skid plate to fix the rock damage was needed and the fuel pump had got a good wack causing it to leak from one connection. Surprising how little fuel is needed to create a massive stink. In the car and even the following car.

Beer and a swimming pool fix most issues though. MJ rejoined that evening IIRC. And the next morning demonstrated the danger of strong Belgian beer.

I hope it is coming thru that while the driving is great, a lot of what sticks in the memory is the other stuff.  Which for me, is why these epic road trips are just about the most fun you can have with cars.  Each day has a route, but also a blank canvass and you never quite know what is in store.  The end of every day brings a sense of achievement.  Sure its not a solo, unsupported trek across the Antarctic, but its something.  As a way of clearing the head, its up there.  You can't really concentrate on anything other than your day ahead and your immediate objectives.
