Targa purchase assistance

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

my name is Rob Annett and I live in northern New South Wales in Australia.

I am new to your site and have also just joined Porsche Club GB.

i currently own a few Porsche’s but not an impact bumper car but I hope to change that.

my reason for joining Porsche club GB and joining your forum is that my wife and I are travelling to the UK in April next year to road trip around UK and the continent for three months and we plan to do our trip in a g series targa.

I am heading over to UK at the end of October to purchase the car (all going well🤞)and will store it with a friend awaiting our return in April 2020

as you can imagine it’s proving quite a task to figure out the pros and cons of buying a thirty ish year old car from the other side of the world so I figured what better way to do it than to ask Porsche guys for any help they would be kind enough to offer.

I would be very grateful if anyone could help in recommending Porsche specialist dealers, Pre purchase inspection specialists, insurance company that will cover a non resident driving the car in UK and Europe (I do have a British passport though as I was born in N Ireland) registration and any other help I can get.

i have also had a look at your for sale section so if anyone is selling a rhd targa I would be very interested in having a look

I am a long time Porsche nut and past president of Porsche Club NSW here in Australia

looking forward to any help you guys can give.

thanks heaps

Rob Annett

Hello Rob, welcome to IB.

Have you found a car or still looking? In terms of a PPI, I guess it depends on where the car is located.

I think Peter Morgan still offers a PPI service which uses a small network to cover the bottoms 2 thirds of England. Otherwise there are a number of good specialists (some not so good) dotted around.

In terms of insurance, I use Locktons underwritten by Chubb - they are a sponsor of PorscheClubGB too, they may be able to help with your specific requirement.

https://www.locktonperformance.com/

i recall reading a thread on pelicanParts about a chap who bought a Porsche approved Uk car and transported it to you part of the world; it didn’t quite meet expectation when it arrived, as it was very rusty, so makes sense to get a decent check over.

Have you thought of using a specialist sourcer, like Williams Crawford or Phil Raby?

Good luck

Shirish

Peter retired a few years ago and Bob Spratley runs the inspection business now. Bob is a nice guy and has done a few inspections on cars I've sold for clients.

Hi Rob. Welcome.

Not for sale but I have a gorgeous very early (Oct 77) 3.0SC Targa. Highly recommended. The little 3.0 engines give their all. You'll have a great time.

As Shirish suggests, Phil Raby in the UK has a good reputation and will source a car for you. I'd ask John (above) for a PPI if you're that far away.

Good luck in any case and a photo to whet your appetite

Hi Shirish

thank you for your reply and the info

i haven’t found a car as yet but I have a list of available cars currently for sale through various specialists. Some will be sold prior to my arrival and I’m sure more will pop up so it’s going to be a case of luck as to what’s on the market when I arrive.

i have contacted Phil raby and he is on the lookout for me. I will however contact Williams Crawford as well so thank you for that contact

great tip for the insurance as well mate

do you know if peter Morgan is still doing ppi,s?

thank you so much for all the info Shirish I really appreciate it👍

Regards

Rob

I run Porsche Valuations. Bob owns Porsche Inspections and Anthony works with Bob so if you're talking to Anthony then that is OK.

One way that some bikers from the US or NZ etc touring the UK and Europe handle insurance is they find a friend in the UK who coincidentally has just bought a bike just like the one that the tourists want to ride and then they use it as a named rider. It is a lot cheaper for two wheeled machines that way.

Hi mate

prefer a 3.2 the newer the better. The structural and mechanical condition will be the important bit the colour not so important.

all the solid colours would be good though red, white etc. I have been looking at a couple of Baltic blue ones and they look great

cheers

Hi Rob,

I have a Targa that I haven't used very much over the last 3-4 years. If you are interested here's a link to where I bought it from...….only condition is that if you buy it and take it to NSW, I can borrow it for a weekend when I visit :)

If I was in the market for a targa I would jump at this.

Stunning colour and fantastic interior.

Hi mate

that is a stunning looking car. One of my mates here at home has a cassis red 964C4 and we all love it. We take the mickey and call it the pink panzer.

i fear though that it may be a little above my budget

what sort of price?

cheers

Rob

It's a very "of its time" colour. It looks very different in changing sunlight.

Glad you know it's called Cassis Red, the kids call it pink, brown and mauve. My friends call it the Miami Vice car.

I've sent you a message Rob
