DIY bonnet and engine cover stays

Sun was out and it is mild so took the opportunity to get this done. I had the bonnet stay done ages ago but needed the engine lid done too.

Ali tube, hinge, bolt.

End cut off bolt and bonded into tube.

Hinge fixed here. Tube cut to length and screwed into hinge.

Hinge fitted other side as well so stay can be placed other side if necessary.IMG_20191208_094206.thumb.jpg.c552be9eee2bd1f3e75167dc3a1f965a.jpg

Spring clip retainer.

There is nothing to place the stay end into on my lid so two mini Darth Vader helmet retainers made.

And placed such.

I'm not entirely happy with the helmets as I feel they should be angled to match the angle of the stay so these are likely to be changed.

Good job👍
I think i am going to pinch this idea! Mine had 2 sprung struts which was great when i had the rear spoiler but threw the lid up when i despoilered! I took one off to save losing my teeth but having a single one seems to twist the lid as its always pushing from one side.
Where did you get the bits?

Thanks Chaps.

The tube (10mm) is from B&Q, about £5. The hinges, spring clips and ferrules for the end of the tube are from Ebay. The bolt is M8. Total for one stay is about £12.

Many thanks for this ebay link for the strut hinges.  I'd been wondering about making an alloy strut for the engine lid (and have already bought the alloy bar) but didn't know these 'ball and socket' hinges were available.  Now ordered and on their way!  Cheers.

@Phil, what length tubes did you use for the struts? 900mm long enough?   I've got the ball mount fixings already.  Might be able to finally retire my trusty old sawn off broom handle :D
