911 R & SC/RS style muffler

Recommended Posts

I really like the exhaust tip location of the 911 R and that of some 911 SC/RS. The tips are neither at the rear corners of the car nor at the centre.

The only muffler that I can find with this configuration is an expensive (3600 eur) headers+muffler set manufactured by M&M:  https://www.fvd.net/de-en/RES91110000S/brombacher-exhaust-system-911-1974-83-race-without-heat-catalytic-bypass-not-us-sc-80-83.html  Brombacher Exhaust System 911 1974-83 - Race - Without Heat - Catalytic Bypass - Not US SC 80-83

Do you know if there is a muffler of this kind that is sold separatelly (and preferably a bit cheaper)?

There is alos this Dansk muffler,  but according to FVD its for 63-75 cars and it looks like straight pipes with a muffler around them so it doesn't look like a viable option for my 1980 street car. https://www.fvd.net/de-en/170025001/muffler-911-1963-75-race-coated-steel-2-in-x-2-out-o-70-mm-2-3-4-tips.html

What set up do you have? SSI? Stock ?

I have stock headers at the moment but I want to change to "race" headers and a 2 in 2 out muffler.

"race headers" You obviously live somewhere warmer than the UK if you want to go without any heat.....

Also, the Dansk muffler pictured will be too loud for street use. Most people go down the SSI + suitable muffler route, plenty of options out there. Have a look at this; https://type911shop.co.uk/epages/de867ca1-377e-432e-84fd-bdccf2206766.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/de867ca1-377e-432e-84fd-bdccf2206766/Products/9833

I do. At least if I stay at low altitude 😁

Yes, the Dansk muffler looks like straight pipes and I want something loud but a bit more reasonable. I know there are plenty of options but the only two that I know with the exhaust spacing that I like are listed in my original post. None of those have the spacing I want:

Have a word with Turbo Thomas. http://www.ttexhausts.com he'll make whatever you wish. Perhaps consider buying the Dansk muffler and having him (or someone more local to wherever you are) modify it?

That's an option I'm seriously considering at the moment...

Now I'm wondering, what's easier to modify:

  • The Dansk muffler above modified to make it quiter.
  • A two tip sports muffler where the tips are moved from the sides to the centre.

?

This is a Turbo Thomas silencer, I think with the outlet spacing you are looking for?

problem is TT has changed his silencer box to a rectangular shape and (in my eyes) just doesn't look right with a higher/old school rear bumper/no valance. Its fine if hidden behind the stock bumpers and valance. Maybe I need to see more pics of one fitted to fg bumpers to be sure :morning:  The rear view with the banana box partially exposed and twin outs is pretty iconic I think.

I fancy a similar rear box to WP0, so be interested in what you find.

+1

If there is no option to buy a muffler like the one I want at a reasonable price I'll go for a customised version of a 2 in 2 out muffler. I've had a chat with a friend of mine who welds exhausts and it turns out that he already did a similar customisation in the past (although it was a 2 in 3 out):

Yes, that's what I want!

I've always been curious about those vanes on the exhaust tips. What are they for?

To make the driver think he is piloting a tie fighter...

Perfect reason right there :D though would have to have a penchant for wearing black  :ninja:

@ the pics above, looks great other than I don't like the third outlet on any backbox, reminds me of bag-pipes whenever I see it.

I am not sure, currently waiting for Richard to build me a muffler. I checked and its an extra £125 to get the cookie cutter tips. I am looking at pictures and can't make my mind up if its worth the extra over standard RSR tips

Just to mention: I bought the above silencer used and at that time those inserts were not orientated as they are in the image - point of fact they weren't even orientated matching each other. This may or may not bother you, but it might be worth checking before buying new.

M&M also offer heat exchangers. I've seen their system in the flesh and the quality is very nice. Haven't heard it though.

You might want to check with them directly, to avoid the FVD tax 😉

With a standard bumper the silencer outlet positioning conflicts with the bumper over riders. I’ve been running it without them for a while and plugged the holes. Have kept the valance off lately too and temporarily fitted some rear number plates lights. Sorry - the winter sun isn’t great for photos...

Looks quite purposeful, had  been thinking of doing something similar with a stinger style exhaust
