Bumpers

Recommended Posts

As part of a pre-summer freshen up I decided I was going to swap my standard, blistered again, bumpers for fibreglass ones, then spend some time getting the originals in shape to no doubt be refitted again somewhere down the line...

The type I finally settled on were the "Yellowbird" style with the Clubautosport ones looking the favourite.

The only thing thing is I'd prefer the rear bumper to have slots, as in the two attached images.

The only option I can find for this though is to buy the 'proper' Ruf ones  but at over $4k for the rear one alone they are more than I'd be prepared to spend.

So, two questions please:

1. Does anyone know of a suppler of the Yellowbird Slotted rear bumper for someone on a modest budget?

2. Can someone suggest where I may get the small square reflector, or fog light, that appears in the rear valence part of both the bumpers on the attached images?

Many thanks

Regards

Mark

I’ve got the Clubautosport bumpers on my car,  the rear has the vertical slots in the middle section as shown in your top picture,  no reason you can’t cut the extra corner slots in it.

I think Northy on this forum cut Ruf slots into his rear bumper,

I’ve been pleased with the quality of the bumpers from Clubautosport by the way.

Thanks Steve thats good to know.

Did you do anything 'clever' when you mounted them, I was going to remove the impact bumper shocks and potential make up some tubes to mount the bumpers on - but would appreciate any pointers?

If you search Markj’s thread,   “RSR bumper fitting”  there’s a lot of info that will be useful for you,

I didn’t have any impact bumper shocks when I fitted the Clubautsport set,    had a different set of fibreglass bumpers beforehand.

mostly used M6 cap head screws,  washer and nyloc nuts and screwed the bumpers directly to the flanges on the inside of the wings, also used a length of 38 x 38mm ally angle to support the inside top surface of the front bumper, the width of the bonnet opening.

My plan will be to have a practice on something similar first with various tools and techniques before starting on the bumper, so if you see a Reliant Robin, Lotus, TVR etc. with similar slots cut out you'll know what has happened to it!

Itchy itchy, itchy!

If you have not worked with fg before, do not underestimate the need to protect yourself from the dust. As well as good sealed eye protection and breathing mask you should cover/seal all skin, e.g. masking tape around the sleeve/glove joint.

Its not difficult, just messy and irritating. I prefer to take longer and use hand tools where possible. It can save time if you include clean up after the job.

Good luck with a router.

Mark the slots.

Cut ‘under size’ using thin slotting discs.
Open slots using flat sanding pad.

Die grinder or Dremmel with sanding drum to form radius's.

This is what I would do also.

With regards to the fog question, have you considered the common mod of changing the RH reverse light into your rear fog?  It'll make the cleanest look by allowing you to remove the fog completely

My experience with fg is canoe repairs, patching holes in ford escorts in the early 80's, and re-roofing a flat-roof garage, so nothing with any finesse.. take your point on the use of hand tools keeping the irritating  dust and clean up time to a minimum.

Nice idea on the fog lights, but mine doesn't have separate fog lights (I believe) they are built into the rear lamp cluster, see attached.  I was mainly wanting to copy the 'CTR look' so was looking to replicate the small square lamp or reflector in the valance area of the two original images I posted.

Ah, I see.  I think the small lights at the bottom of your original pic are just small reflectors, not fog lights.

Perhaps something along the lines of these:

Correct, just reflectors.

EU regs required a minimum distance from the edges of a car for rear reflectors. EU 930s had to have them as they had the wider wings and had them incorporated into the rubber strip. The RUF CTR had extended rear arches, between the 911 and 930 size, and added them lower down. If you want a really authentic look you will need to extend the rear arches and get the 17" Speedlines!

Every day is a school day. What I'd give for some Speedlines at normal alloy wheel prices 🤣

I'm trying to get the RUF CTR look while maintaining the option to reverse to standard easily - so extending the wheel arches is beyond the scope of the project, but I have been looking at the Speedlines (not sure if they'll fit on a narrow car though)!

I'll see how the bumper mods go first.

I did get myself some inspiration and a model to work from on ebay the other day though.

Two different widths for the speedlines

You need the 9x17 rear, not the 10x 17

OK thanks, the sets of (4) speediness I've seen for sale are for 2 of 9x17 + 2 of 10x17 I assume these are for front and rear respectively of a wide bodied car?

  • 10 months later...

I've just come across this thread while looking at general RUF images in Google...... I've been a lurker for a while so Hi all.

It sounds like you're doing whats already been done to mine. My money pit resembles a CTR if you're 20ft away and squint a bit.
The kit sold the car for me......... shame everything else is what others would probably avoid (2.7 Emission Spec - Japanese, Sportomatic, LHD....... non Runner)

It's got the RUF style slats in the rear bumper..... I've tried to find any signs of a brand or make but can't see anything so far.

It's on Fuchs atm...... I think they are Turbo ones (I was told anyway when I bought it)..... I went to view a set of RUF wheels in Redditch a couple of years ago not long after getting the car.
10J Rears and Jesus they looked huge, the guy reckoned too wide for mine so I held off..... plus the fact they were £2000 and needed a hefty refurb (some bad corrosion) plus new tyres.

Recent...ish a set of Azev A's came up in 8.5J Front & 10J Rears for cheeeeap. So jumped on them as close...ish alternatives. I've not tried them on yet as the things in a narrow garage and up on stands while I take those horrid Thermal Reactors off it and figure out a way to make a 991 Centre Box fit.

Soon as I get chance I'll see how they sit and report back. Mine was a narrow body but at some point someone in Japan got a bit RWB and gave it what I'm assuming are SC/Carrera arches.
