2005 Discovery

Recommended Posts

Not what you'd call a classic, but I love it just the same.

Picked up a 2005 (low car tax) Land Rover Discovery 4.4 V8 HSE.

I'm aware I'm killing the planet but it's bloody brilliant!

It had 137k miles on it when I got it in December, its got almost 142k on it now after some European road tripping with the family over xmas and new year.  Picked it up for a song and then got a full service and a couple of niggles sorted.  Only thing that's stopped working is the parking brake which I now have time to get round to,

I know they get a bad rep for reliability but I've got no complaints at all.  Hot hatch performance with added body roll!

Have a look at the electric handbrake module. It’s a complete unit with motor and cables.
LR updated the service schedule for vehicles used off road - inspect / clean brakes every time the vehicle is used off road!

The brake shoes and cables start to stick causing plastic teeth to snap. Specialists offer an exchange service (£300), APEC can supply reasonable aftermarket modules (£500 - £600). It is a plug and play part but you need to change settings to calibrate the brake shoes.

Also had one of these about 3 years ago, ours was a 2.7 diesel 7 seater on a 06 plate  which was named as Mr Barrys holiday car. Bought it from Copart put new wishbones and upright on O/S front and even found a second hand wing in the right colour for £90. Ran it for about a year including a trip to Center Parks in Holland. Then sold it on before anything went wrong, still miss it for lots of things, great old car might have another one one day. New ones dont do it for me, mate has got a petrol Evoque and says its terrible on fuel and very partial to days at the dealers.

You can't go wrong with a 4x4 for some household duties.  We have had a 2010 Land Cruiser 3.0D4D for 5 years and it is bullet proof reliability and has taken us all over Europe.  Great work horses.

Mine is certainly terrible on fuel.  The Europe trip did 18.8mpg, but it usually gets about 16.5mpg 😨

Its a brave man that admits that! At least fuel is getting cheaper - although the producers don't seem to be passing on the real drop - guess they'll blame the plague.

My Range Rover Sport TDV8 got 28mpg on a run to Monaco and back and gets 26 average. Its a peach of an engine!

127k on it now and while it isn't the most reliable car to own, it just ticks all the boxes in terms of family car practicality, fun and tow car capability. I was going to change it this year but given the current situation its staying for another year. Just flew through its MOT.

Do you guys do proper fill up calculations for your mpg or rely on  what the computer is telling you?

i was following the computer, but then someone told me that they aren't accurate.  so i ran a spreadsheet for a couple of months and put my fuel receipts into it - waste of time, the computer was spot on!

Work on the basis of being approximately right, rather than precisely wrong! Life's too short for anything else.

Computer for ours - I know it will be a bit wrong, but when the wife is putting £90-£100 in a week and getting around 350 miles then I know it's terrible and that's enough for me!  She isn't doing short town journeys anymore so it's using much less these days.

Had a Disco TD4 for a couple of weeks  as an experiment as was thinking of getting one so swoppeed my X5 with a friend.I quite liked the disco but wanted my X5 back. Jon wanted to swop permenantly 🤔 can’t beat the X5 tbh, I’ve had 4 since they came out, now the kick up the arrrr5e bit.  Fancied a change so bought an X6 M50d, 37000 miles, lovely bit of kit but week before the CV19 hit it had to go into dealer for a fault as one of the three turbos wasn’t kicking in. Dealers now shutdown for the duration so chris knows when I’ll see it again.

should've kept the X5 🥴

Interesting and lucky I suppose. I'm a bit (very) (OCD) sad when comes to working out my mpg. I work out every tankful and on all the cars I've had with computers they have all over egged the pudding by 2-3 mpg. It frustrates the hell out of me when my wife fills up and doesn't reset the trip

Still, a lovely car, I do like them and you get a lot for your money.
