CIS Injector Removal

Lesworth

Recommended Posts

I am going to take a stab at replacing my injectors which, after 38 years and 122k miles, are well passed their best. I'm not experiencing any particular symptoms, just think it makes sense at the price. Has anyone removed injectors before and if so, any particular pitfalls to be wary of? I'm aware that there is a plastic insert so also wondering if its best t leave that alone if it looks sound...

I removed a set a few years ago, simple push fit with a rubber ring to retain them I seem to remember. I didn't replace them, just had them cleaned. The place I used was an 'old skool' Bosch injection specialist with a special hand pumped rig to pump cleaning fluid through at high pressure. They cleaned up great and I re-fitted them. Worth thinking of a clean before splashing out on new...?

Les, I bought a new set of injectors last month on fleabay and they weren’t a bad price.  I also bought new rubber O rings/seals.  The injectors come out easily, more easily if you have backdated heat as there’s less in the way.  Have a look on Pelican for one of their tech articles, but it’s not difficult.

I read somewhere someone estimating a 100k Miles life

With the positive change I experienced on the 924 its a no brainer for me to replace them. Just thinking ahead to removal. Hopefully that will be as easier as you say Chris & Ian 🤞.

I'll take some pictures and post them up here for reference when I do it.

Ian, did you remove the sleeves as well or did they stay in the runners?

Saw this done at JZM using the "pry with large flat screwdriver" method - followed by the "pry with even larger flat screwdriver" method. Worked just fine!

The plastic inserts are also inexpensive - I did all of mine and the o rings the same time.

When I took a couple of mine out it was relatively hard work and the o rings disintegrated. I may be mistaken but isn't there a special Porsche tool for the job?

I used two open jaw spanners to get mine out.  One just smaller than the injector/pipe union engaging just below the union and a bugger one just below that.  Levered one against the other, worked really well to loosen the injector and then just pull out by hand

The screwdriver thing is fine to get them out - not hard to do. They can't be cleaned effectively, as you know, as they wear out. That doesn't stop people having a go though.

Injector cleaning thread on Pelican

Personally I think they go longer than 100k - I have had CIS Mercs using these injectors at 180k, definitely never changed and no probs. I like the injector cleaning idea and may have a go at it as a weekend project for the craic.

@Ian Comerford, what did you pay for your set?

I don’t think anyone said that 100k was definitive and it obviously depends upon usage and application [MB vs VW vs Porsche etc).  However, if it runs better afterwards and after 100k or so miles then it feels like the expense is not ridiculous.  The injectors I bought last month were £160

I hear what you say about them wearing out but my set were visibly brought back to life in front of my eyes, 'spitty' spray to nice fine cone spray as they should be. Can't give you a before/after as the engine was rebuilt at the same time.

Chris.

Well, just pulled two injectors using the 'Comerford Method'. Very very easy! I don't know why i thought this would be a challenge. The inserts stayed firmly in place on these two and look in great condition. The seals were also very supple still and the injectors don't look as 'original / old' as those I removed from the 924. I have a string feeling they have been replaced previously. I'll leaf through the history later to see if I can find anything. I know the metering head was rebuilt before my ownership so maybe it was part of that work.

I've ordered the injectors now anyway so will still push ahead and replace them. Thanks for everyone's comments.

  • 1 year later...

My runners were already off when I did mine.

I’m sure that it’s doable in situ but my biggest concern would be dremeling off the peened over parts without getting swarf in the engine.  However, once that’s done, the sleeves should pull out easily enough
