1976 3.0 project car help

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have just bought a 1976 Carrera 3.0 and according to the Red Book is a J series but online searches say I series, VIN is 9116600250, is this a rare car? It is currently diamond blue was supplied in Minerva and want to restore and finish in Arrow blue. It has a whale tail fitted but its fibreglass with a rotten lower frame, is this original or should it be all metal? I have just bought a replacement engine lid without tail as I prefer the look without.

I also have an Australian delivered 1977 Targa so will eventually let the coupe go, if it is quite rare maybe I should do more homework before stripping down!

best

Keith

I'm not an expert on C3s I think Bertroex is your man for that.

If you fancy selling your rotten lid let me know.

I think Carrera 3.0 are reasonably rare. Doesn't the sheriff have one, The Orange?

Arrow Blue is the best choice of course..........

Nice one. Yes Carrera 3s are pretty rare and sought after.

By the look of the hinges those are the early Recaro sports seats and a real find 👌

Also got 15 x 7 & 8 Fuchs too. They are nice to have too.

Wow, what a find, in RHD too!

Pretty rare car, looks well spec'd (love the sports Recaros) and defo worth a proper top end resto.

What's it like structurally?

If the engine is original matching numbers then I'd be returning it to its original colour, particularly if you plan on selling once restored.

Al.

Structurally very sound and interior in good condition (new carpets and headlining for sure). Matching numbers and a good colour combination, I like the Arrow blue but it sounds like I should go Minerva as it was built, to be attractive for a future sale.

Thanks for the all the replies I've learn't a lot more :)

Is the fibreglass with metal frame engine cover original?

I would definitely restore in Minerva but tbh if you got it for a good price I would sell it as-is. Do not take the tail off.

RHD C3 is rare - not super expensive rare but hard to find and a complete period car is what people are looking for. If you're not going to throw several hundred hours into this and do it properly then sell it.

The great Hans Mezger passed away this week and of all the cars he could have kept, he kept his C3. To those who know them well, they are keepers.

Thanks John, I will be restoring it and thinking original colours and whale tail but with the non tail lid finished in the blue so the new owner (or me!) can have a change of look every now and then.

Me again 😀, I have found a PCGB letter saying that this car has Factory Fitted Options of front and rear spoilers, 7 and 8 inch Fuchs  and Esr/w/m/a, does anyone know what the last items are? Also a subsequent modification of pressure fed tensioners.

Is there a story to how you came across it?  It's such a great find, I'm very pleased it been found and will be saved from the scrap heap!

Minerva blue is fantastic, one of the best ever 911 colours and perfect for a 70s car.

Very nice find. I have a 1976 C3 that I have owned for 20 years now. I restored a few years after purchased it and used it as my daily driver company car for seven years, then decided it was racking up more miles than was sensible so it has been a weekend car for the last five years. I changed the colour from the Ice Grun metallic to a BMW Glacier Green when restoring it first time round, but will change it back when I next restore the body work.

Love the seats and check fabric! Does it have a passenger side mirror? Hope you get the proper headlight washer jets as part of the restoration 😉

There's a pair for sale on FB for £200.

Someone on here was talking about 3D printing some though a while ago.

Pretty sure Porsche started making these again under their Classic parts programme.

Stoddard certainly have them. Ask at your local OPC which I think should be open again.

Hi Keith

I have a few washer jets and Simon is correct, Matt keeps new reproductions in stock.

I suggest you find an old flat lid and cut the frame out and get it fitted in to your spoiler. They are too rare to lose one, as they are a '75/'76 option only. Mechspray in Rochester, Kent are experts on fiberglass repairs and painting.

Definitely a car worth keeping, the last low number 911 and slowly creeping up in value.

Guy on here is also the PCGB admin for 2.7/3.0 Carrera's and knows everything possible about these cars.

Keep us up to date on your plans.

Thanks Jason.

Keith, I remember liaising with you about your Oz Targa and reiterate everything that has already been said about your C3. Good find.

The car has in fact been on the PCGB register from a long time ago with an owner in central London. I presume though that the car has been off the road for a while.

Thanks all for all the replies, this really is a great place for Porsche chat!  I did email you Guy at PCGB but may have got the address wrong, will check. It does have the passenger mirror but seems like I need the correct washer jets for sure Jason 😀.

Sadly the owner passed away a few months back and I got the car from a dealer friend who sold her a Fiat (I ended up buying her old Panda as well🙃).

I will look out for an old lid to repair the whale tail but will probably fit the non tail lid I have to speed the restoration up. A bit disappointed not Arrow blue but will go factory with the Minerva, both blues work really well with the interior.

I got both cars together today for the first time.

Best

Keith
