Period seat options for an 84MY Carrera

Hi everyone, I have a quick question. I am looking for seat options for a Carrera made in OCT 83.

Was tartan ever a period correct option in 83/84. What other options were there for cars of that era? Pictures is the car currently and I want to spruce it up. I am toying between tartan/pinstripe/plain old leather!

Thank you all!

This is from a 84 MY brochure, showing all the standard options, there was also a light grey carpet which I missed when taking the pic.  If you fancy sprucing it up with some tartan, I don't think you'll find many objections from anyone on here :steering:

Just the front seats, what about the door panels and also rear seat to match, that would spruce it up.

I am unsure may just just do that as well. I am eagerly awating the car to cross the Tasman sea. I will post more pics once it is here and i fix all my niglly bits to it.

If you're going to the levels of trimming seats/cards/carpets then really the worlds your oyster.

Have you thought about contacting a custom trimmer?  There is a reputable trimmer near me that a lot of the VW scene use, who produces some fantastic stuff:

https://www.davethetrimmer.com/contact  (No affiliation by the way, just example of what can be done)

The beauty of our old cars is that you can pretty much do anything to the interior and it would still look good.  Mine has bright red bucket seats for example!!  (admittedly not to everyone's taste, but don't build your car for other people to enjoy)

If you're in Australia then you're probably best getting fabric shipped over from Europe and done locally.

There are a few German companies that will supply fabric only. Try cabrio.de. They look like Merc only on website but do all old Porsche still.

Lakewell could also be an option. Also Garry Hall at Visual FX who is very active over on DDK.

Enjoy!  Pics of car please when it arrives.

Al.

Here she is finally home!

I also got a Kardex printed out, I wonder what options did the car come with from factory.  Can someone enlighten me?

I also wondered does this mean i need to change the whole part? Or just the switch head. Lots of difference in terms of parts.

Lastly, where can one get a whole set of targa seals? And what do they cost. I thought I’ll rather get the carpets, interior and seals all done now to make it “brand new”. Thank you all!

Headlight switches are not cheap, over £400 new I think.  Some enterprising and practical individuals have taken them apart and managed to fix for a few pence.  If that person might be you, give it a go, it’s just a switch.  For parts lost of us use Matthew at Type 911, great place to buy parts . https://type911shop.co.uk/epages/de867ca1-377e-432e-84fd-bdccf2206766.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/de867ca1-377e-432e-84fd-bdccf2206766/Categories/Shop/3/90/365

Thanks all. Got to love pinstripe! Google gives me different images of how seats look. Anyone have any factory pictures of how a car from 1984 with black leather/leatherette and pinstripe looks for the front and for the rear seats? I wonder if doorcards had them as well?

This is going to be exciting!

Not black, blue, but should be the same apart from the colour. UK delivered '84

Thank you for all of your replies guys. Car has been great, my only gripe is when I engaged into 5th gear, it rubs into my knee and I am thinking of removing the centre console to free up some space. I am also looking to change all of my targa seals? Took the car out in the rain and it did leak a fair bit...and the wind noise was horrible as well...I do love targas but it was almost impossible to have a conversation in the car. I have contacted Dan Petchel for the seal and purchased it but am unsure what part number his seal replaces.

Does anyone know, if these are the parts I need to get? And does anyone know if Dan Petchel’s parts replace 911.565.090.47.

(2) 902.531.093.40 left/right door seals
(1) 911.565.260.40 right side seal
(1) 911.565.259.40 left side seal
(1) 901.565.091.44 (1970-1973) OR 911.565.091.45 (1974-1985) bar seal
(1) 911.565.090.47 windshield frame seal

(1) 911.541.225.03 windshield seal

Does anyone know if there is a “targa seal” kit deal which includes seals for the doors as well? (Where are they the cheapest lol!)

Lastly, Re the seats, I have managed to track down a set of 84 sports seats and would be putting them into the car with black leather and pinstripes. Now to await the carpet kit from lakewell.
Thank you all for the replies and help!!

Do you have any shots of the top and how it fits to windscreen?  It maybe the outer skin leading edge that is raised, it should be angled down, a common cause for noise.  Also, make sure all of the small catches around the edge of the roof are properly engaging on the frame.  Mine weren't for a while which meant, when driving, the skin would lift and create a great additional area for  ventilation.

I am not sure it can be manipulated to angle down, I think you made need to separate, re-position and re-glue the outer cover.  Depending on the condition of the outer cover, you might need to replace it, they are not that expensive.

Might be worth getting someone driving alongside at speed and having the passenger take some photos to see if the top is billowing out.

My understanding of the top construction is that the outer skin is mostly cosmetic; it's the fabric and webbing inside that stretch and weaken over time causing the top to loose its shape at speed and get noisy. The lumpy appearance of your top suggests this might be the case.

Have you checked the alignment of the windows with respect to the top? There are quite a few adjustments that will affect sealing and noise. Can you take some photos of the tops of the door windows and how they fit into the top when the door is closed? Some noise problems can be reduced by lowering the windows a few cm after the doors are shut and then raising them again.

I have some targa fitting documents somewhere - will dig them out and put them on dropbox.
