My 911? Just.....NO

Hopefully this will be something my daughter will have to worry about when she gets the car, hopefully I'll still be able to run an ICE 911 as long as I'm physically able to drive one.

This is a bit of very clever design work 😎

FWD, RWD, AWD, whatever layout you want, reminds me of a Tamiya RC car, pop on a different bodyshell and have some fun

All the company needs to do now is to start manufacturing carbonfibre Mk1/Mk2 Escort, Porsche 911/356 BMW 2002, Alfa 2000 GTV, Datsun 240Z etc bodyshells

Completely agree. This is clearly the way forward. You can have any style of car you want on a modern purpose built chassis. The electrification of existing classics is utterly ridiculous. Poor range, long charging times, loss of soul and character and preposterously expensive. You still can't go for a jaunt across Europe (or the US for that matter) though. I still can't understand why Hydrogen is not be pushed.

Completely agree. Don't see the point in converting genuine classics. But..... in a few years, would you be tempted by a Cayman that can do this or better Mark?

I think at the moment the key thing for me is that they are so much heavier. They are generally really powerful but the novelty of doing a quick squirt to 60 wears off after a while. If the batteries and motors can be developed so they give equivalent (or better) power per kilogram as an Internal Combustion Engine (just for you Teaboy) then you've potentially got something that handles really well  - at that point the lack of engine noise is less of an issue to me. Currently though sticking a few hundred Kilos of weight into a car and making up for that with more power leaves me cold

Wait for hydrogen cells powering the electric motors.  That will be lighter.

Agree 100%

Been reliably informed a new still to be launched German SUV hybrid weight is worryingly close to 3500 kgs 😲

The manufacturer is concerned as in Germany you need a truck license to drive anything above 3500 kgs 😂

I’m completely with you on this Mark, it is the beating heart and character of the car.  However, there are classics where that is not the case, or is but to a lesser extent.  So there could be a case

With the 914, I’m at 1200kg and 50/50 weight distribution with 300HP and 150 - 180 mile range.   That’s lighter than a 3.2 with a passenger.

Interesting but I don’t think that’s it. We’re all driving round with tanks of seriously flammable stuff in our cars already (ask Doc Rock) and leccy cars make a fine bbq if they go wrong (ask Richard Hammond)

Except that is a photo of a copper mine in Chile.

Ah the perils of using "interweb" - thanks for the correction!

On the subject of copper then its consumption by the automotive sector would probably quadruple if we all switched to EVs.

Not just EV’s.  Batteries are everywhere.  Copper is everywhere.  Cobalt is everywhere.

Earth’s resources are finite, whatever you dig up.    There is only so much oil in the ground as with everything else.

At least batteries can store and release energy over a long period of time, unlike oil which is just burnt.   Can be recycled too.
