Interesting set of books for planning/motivating an Alpine trip

Recommended Posts

I've also been tempted by the 'Curves' publications.

Bear in mind that the set of books I have highlighted date from around the 30s. I think this new publication does have some newer content though, and the passes won't exactly have changed that much!

Thanks - looks like a good candidate for the Christmas list.

Brings back a nice memory. My grandfather was Swiss and some time in the late 80s I went cycling with a friend in the Swiss Alps. We cycled a number of passes and on my next visit to my grandfather (then a widower in his late 80s) I told him of our exploits. He didn't say anything for a bit so I wondered if he had heard me. Then he spoke of a trip he did in his late teens and described some of the buildings on top of one of the passes and that as his bike only had a coaster brake they would drag pine boughs behind them on the longest descents to keep the brake from overheating. I hope I'm still mentally that sharp in my late 80s!

Curves book are great- I’ve used French Alps, USA, Scotland and Mallorca- have most of the others too .

Beautifully photographed and produced by Stefan Bogner - a complete Porsche nut.

Incredible value for money IMO- great reading even if you’re not planning a trip😀

Check Amazon for pricing- most have an English edition.

Absolutely, the Curves publications are worth their weight in gold for touring. Even if your not sure about the routes they can be a great starting point. My go to if I’m driving somewhere unfamiliar. Oh and MR Bogner is a nice chap.

This new publication looks right up our street too, think i'll add it to my library :) its dual lingo, German and English. Have long wanted to explore this region more.

Got this book beginning of the week.  Only had time to flick through it so far, but its quite a piece of work.  Not quite a "how to" as its not that easy to follow the routes.  You need a magnifying glass.  Definitely gives me something to think about for 2021.

Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber in Northen Bavaria is a beautiful medieval walled city, visited it many times, any excuse to stop/stay there

The area of Europe from East Switzerland, covering southern Germany, Austria, Slovenia and the all the way across to Eastern Hungary has to be one of the prettiest parts of the world I've seen
