Piston barrel set help

PJWS

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

It's been a long time since I've posted but I hope someone can give me advice

My 1979 SC after years of rare use has required an engine re build ( not ideal as I was made redundant last year at 53.... )

Just a brief background

I approached a well known specialist near me in Essex for the said rebuild and he initially seemed keen quoting me around £10000 (assuming nothing peripheral needed replacing ie heat exchangers etc)

This unfortunately led nowhere (still not sure why) despite me chasing up and agreeing the go ahead

So..my local garage stepped in and are doing the work

They do specialise in classic cars but not necessarily Porsche

They have been struggling to find a set of pistons/ barrels etc and have quoted me £5500 for a set they have found ( from where I don't know)

I appreciate it's a pretty random question but does this sound about right price wise?( Even considering the present situation)

I'm no mechanic but can obviously get more info about what's included in the cost (it seems it's the barrels that are hard to get?)

Any help advice would be great

Appreciate these cars cost to mend ( had mine for 15 or so years) but I'm struggling at the moment to justify that cost just for pistons etc

Thanks and take care

Preston

Have they said why you need a whole set?

Talk to Matt and see what the issue are in getting stock.

£5500 seems silly when Matt has then listed at £2700+vat (although maybe not immediately available)

I’ve got a set of standard barrels & pistons from my ‘79 SC - around 70k miles on the odometer.  Two barrels could do with a clean up of the outside corner of the top faces where they blew due to head bolt failure.

If of any interest, please pm me & I’ll send photos & try to answer any questions
