Engine Oil Tank

The question is what is the oil tank made of on a 1981 911SC?

During annual service a Porsche specialist stated "Oil tank is corroded and rusting on the inside."   He seemed to be hankering after changing the oil tank.    I said that I thought that the oil tank was made of stainless steel but he said no, it is an internally copper coated tank.   The visible part under the wheel arch certainly is very clean and non corroded.  It has the appearance of stainless steel.    I have now checked the tank and believe it to  be made of stainless steel albeit with a brass filler neck and maybe other connections.   The so called rust was a dark sticky deposit around the top inside of the filler neck.  The deposit was confined to the top 50mm or so.   A few particles were present in the deposit that I could not identify but I doubt that they were rust.   I checked the tank internals with a powerful torch and from what i could see it was very clean.

All help and comments will be appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Many thanks Leicestershire for your helpful reply.  Much appreciated.

I am not too concerned about the tank at present.  The filler cap showed heavy rust when I bought the car 26y ago.   This has been replaced.  I only take the car out for fairly long runs and have never seen condensation in the filler.   I think that in its previous life it must have had a considerable time on short runs without fully warming up.   It runs well and the oil is always very clean so will assume all is OK.  I recently had the level float assembly out to re-tension the slider and fit a new gasket.  I looked in the tank then and saw no rust.  Could still be a fool's paradise!

It’s probably worth giving it a good flush and seeing what comes out.  Also worth protecting the outside with an appropriate coating such as 2 pack epoxy.  I wouldn’t use POR15 after experiencing some issues with it on my tank.

I bought an used oil tank recently that seemed fine, but found pinholes when I pressure tested it, so it went back on the shelf. Took my original tank to a "radiator repair" shop and had it cleaned, but found surface rust inside after cleaning (used boroscope) so it went on the shelf with the other one.... Dansk have a stainless steel tank that should gets good reviews on pelican, does anyone on here have any experience with the Dansk tanks?
