911 steering column UJ's

Hi,

Can anyone give me a source in UK or Europe for these steering column UJ's. 93034702504

I don't want to buy from USA as just got caught out with some parts from Pelican parts. I knew I would have VAT and customs but then I get another huge charge comes through 2 weeks later from a clearing house company that processed the parts 'on my behalf' through the system.

Amazed I spoke with my old colleagues at our purchase department and we paid less than £5 for the piece part price on the lowering steering column UJ and Porsche GB aftersales price is £285 +vat+delivery for just one. OK I know the spare parts aftermarket has to make a profit but sometimes it is quite astonishing........our RR Shadow Saginaw steering pump we used on Jaguar too cost 9 USD and RR years ago wanted 980GBP. The front dual warning brake pressure splitter on our Ferrari308 an ATE part sourced via ATE cost me 28GBP and Ferrari 1080 GBP....yes I even asked if they got the decimal point in the wrong place.

I don't mind quality patterned parts but not interested in secondhand.

Regards

Steve

Thanks Ian that is a big saving and looks a decent part machined from solid as opposed to a casting.

I can get mine rebushed but it is just the one so figured to keep the car on the road easy just to go for the one and then send off the sloppy one to get rebushed and keep as a spare.

Not sure how they do it as the casting for the bearings on the original one the yokes have been pleened over to hold bearing cap in position unlike some that would use an inside circlip in a groove.

If anyone else has any other sources let me know but I will order one here tomorrow if not.

Regards

Steve

These two look rather similar to me...

One is sold as a Porsche part for over $200. The other is sold as a generic for £26.40.

Which one's which?

ps...apologies for the thread hack.

I don’t like the look of the one in the picture above at all.  It seems to be made of folded steel if you look closely.  The Type 911 one definitely isn’t.

You’d be surprised to find that this folded design is OEM. At least it was in ‘73. I’ll have a look in my SC smugglers box this weekend to check if this was still fitted on my ‘83.

Thanks everyone and no complaints about a thread hack I am sure very useful info.

I have seen all 3 types (cast, billet, folded) used on cars in the UK and certainly on ALL my classic cars from Jaguar, Astons, Lotus. Triumph, etc these have always been a casting. I saw the folded metal type some years ago appear on Fords so just assumed it was a cheaper way to manufacture the parts. I suppose the problem is often no one knows for sure whether what they have was actually Job1 OEM fit. The two fitted on my car are both castings.

The biggest issue is obviously the spline count and shaft diameter hence I will only buy from a reputable supplier for Porsche parts. I see that there is a warning note on this early model 911 period that both a fine spline and coarse splines were used but it appears fine spline very much earlier than my car. This is really why I dismissed secondhand ones too.

I do like the picture though of the genuine Porsche one on the Design911 site.........it really does look like it is machined from a piece of solid 22 ct gold. If only they would have used 9 ct it would have been cheaper........that is some mark up on prices.

On the Rolls Royce sites there is a database of alternative parts many being used by different car companies and actually produced by same tier supplier.

I just renewed (well there was nothing fitted) the shifter rear coupling rubber cover not that the part is that expensive but add postage into it then it was worth a look through the steering rack end gaiters I have in my classic parts stock and found a perfect one to fit...........trouble is I have no idea what car I bought them for.

I am surprised.  I thought it was value engineering rather than the old school over- engineering we prefer in these cars.

Can I ask if you could guide me where I could get this pattern coupler for £26? Not a fan of Porsche tax!!
thanks in advance
