Evening all.

While trundling home through the London traffic on Monday I stopped to let a taxi out and was rewarded for the kindness by getting hit by the Audi A3 behind.  I was stationary and the A3 was doing around 20mph.

Other than a scuff on the near-side overrider (about which I am not bothered), there is no visible damage to the exterior.

I have checked the bumper mount tubes and *think* they look ok:

Should I replace the tubes anyway out of precaution?

Is there anything or anywhere else I should check for damage?

Thanks in advance.

Jack

Get it up on a ramp and check alignment, subframes, panel gaps etc etc. 20mph is a pretty hard hit and I’d he amazed if there isn’t more damage.

My trusty old CRV suffered the same a few years ago, the back only looked slightly dented, but the boot door was buckled and it got written off

If you have the shock type mounts you maybe ok as long as the impact was directly onto the overrider?

If you have the crumple mounts they need to be changed

Perhaps, if you think there is damage or you are not sure you should have it professionally checked? Go through the insurance. You are not to blame so it shouldn't cost you anything (you did get the other drivers details?)

Agreed - a car going 20 mph hitting the back of your car is carrying a lot of energy. US spec IB's with their bigger overriders were meant to be able absorb a 5mph impact - at 20 mph the theoretical energy to be absorbed is some 16 times greater.

😖

I was hoping your responses would be different.

It was not a big hit.  In fact, it took me a few seconds to recognise that we had been hit as my first thought was that I had somehow dropped the clutch.

Not sure if this is going to work:

Any recommendations for a suitable specialist near South East London?

Not seeing any of your photos.

It asked me to sign into google on the first two?!

But wouldn’t show me the photos.

(On my iPhone)

Hmm, ok.  Sorry about that.  Will try a different route.

That wouldn't be a 20mph shunt, 20mph is a big shunt, hope you're car hasn't suffered anymore damage that just the bumper tubes

When in Rome that would be a referred to as a parking nudge

Probably not: I am competent in some things but not in IT.

Will investigate a different photo sharing site shortly.

Get it checked, the bumper shocks are sub 5mph I think.  The next crumple zone is your exhaust and all it's mountings which is basically the engine! Then the chassis legs, etc.

You don't want a crabbing car!

Doesn’t look like 20mph but still worth of deeper investigation

Definitely not 20mph. At 20mph you'd probably have whiplash. I think they had almost come to a stop and it was last moment touch.

Wow! Def not 20mph then. Phew.

Will get it checked nonetheless. Any recommendations for a capable specialist near SE London please? I've used Elite in Bexleyheath for brakes lines and pads but don't know if they're the right place for this kind of check.

Hoping these photos of the bumper tubes work.
