2.7s Targa Front end Clunk

Recommended Posts

Recently acquired a very nice 2.7s Targa. I am new to 911's so all a bit fresh to me.

Couple of things- due to the rubbish weather I haven't had a  chance to put many miles on - couple of things - steering does seem a bit wooly especially on turning right - is that just a feature of the car ?

Also on sharp turning left I get a metallic clunk from the front left side of the car - what could that be - nothing feels loose it sounds like something hitting the inside of the luggage compartment but I have nailed down anything loose so bit puzzled

This board looks good - I am a Road trip veteran having done several Euro trips with my '68 Alfa 1750. You guys seem similarly adventurous !!

Cheers

Andy

Sounds like something is amiss as the steering on these cars are far from wooly.

Additionally the front and rear suspension can be refurbished DIY at not too much cost.  If you've got pretty decent skills it's straight forward, rewarding and beneficial especially if its crusty and tired looking.

It may look unconventional but it's just nuts and bolts with no special tools required with exception of the balljoint socket.

Will try and get a look underneath at the weekend. It certainly feels like there is some movement in the vertical (12/6 o'clock) plane whereas lateral movement is ok.

Does that point to wheel bearings? - my manual suggests that would be tricky as a DIY job ?

On the assumption it is wheel bearings you might get away with tightening them up.  But replacement is straight forward, so either DIY or don't get over charged at your preferred garage due to sucking of teeth and "Porsche Tax"

Yeah I don't think they are mission critical just yet so may wait for some better weather and tackle myself. Glad to see you guys are quite handy looking forward to getting busy with it and also a chance to drive her ! I am not one for throwing thousands at specialists unless its just too difficult from home

I'm not sure of the differences between my '80 SC and your 2.7 but my front end refresh was really straightforward.

All new bushes (silicon grease is a must), wheel bearings, ball joints, track ends, brakes discs and pads as well as 2 bearings in the steering rack.

Done at home with a good range of DIY tools on axle stands. Someone has already said you'll need a ball joint socket, I have one I'm happy to lend if you pay return postage but it proved useless in my case. Mine was so seized I drilled holes in the collar and split it instead of unscrewing it.

Very satisfying 👍

Tell me, I have a big tub of nice clean red rubber grease that I was going to use as a lube to rebush my front suspension.  Is Silicon Grease considered better than this for suspension rebuilds and, if so, why?

Silicon grease was recommended to me as it isn't hydrocarbon based so won't cause the rubber to soften or swell. It helps to preserve the rubber bushes.

I'm sure your big tub of rubber grease will be equally good or better 👍

  • 3 weeks later...

Guys is it possible in my 77my to hang the caliper up to avoid bleeding the brakes ? -i don't really want go open thatbox at the moment?

Have the front wheels off for the first time and there isn't much room there. Does the flexible to solid connector unclip to give me a bit more movement?

Thks
