Isabella SWB 68 912

Hot on the heels of my selling my “bigger than I expected and got daunted” 912E project, I’ve promptly bought another!

A 912 as before because I missed having something totally different in the garage and because I’ve always liked the underdog that became cool.

I’ve named the old girl Isabella as she was registered in Italy in February 1968. Irish green with Fuchs. Originally supplied with beige and houndstooth interior (now an ivory leatherette albeit dirty as hell) which I’ll likely reinstate in time. Not currently running as the last owner got it running then decided he wanted to get the carbs clean and tinware reconditioned. His girlfriend got pregnant and he lost the enthusiasm.

In steps I. Viewing a week or so ago. Paint is tatty, interior is ratty, but it’s there and reasonably solid for a 68 912. Looks like it may have been painted at home and I’m guessing a new floor has gone in. Sills are screwed but ok for now.

Picked her up on Sunday 27/12 and sorted the parts. Spent yesterday removing seats and cleaning the engine bay. Seals are shot as she’s wet inside but I’m drying her with the aid of a fan after removing all low down carpets. Today I stripped off the tree stated bits of tinware and repainted, cleaned the engine bay quite thoroughly, refitted the tinware, started assembling the fan housing, ordered an ultrasonic cleaner for the carbs and started making lists of gaskets, rubbers etc I’ll need. Order going into opc very soon.

I’m really looking forward to this one. Not so big a project as to scare the inexperienced like me but enough scope to get stuck in and improve over time. Thing is I like it as it is. Rat 912! No bells, whistles, is what it is and I don’t have to be overly precious over it. Like to get her mechanically A1 then see where I want to go cosmetically. Isabella. Loving the name already and think it suits this little old girl

In a blink of an eye you've assembled quite a collection.

Hopefully see you in the Spring

Enjoy

Cheers Mike. Yup, they’re diverse alright. This one feels like the baby in the lineup. Much work to do but I’m enjoying it.
Question will be whether to restore or just get her running well and enjoy.

There is an exhaust for sale over on DDK you might like.

Thanks Phill. Had a look. Think I’m going down the stock route for this.

Lol I agree not my usual modus operandi but Mrs Bee wants to drive this and the untouched charm shines through on this one. Nice to have different cars for different moods.

I’m at a point of deciding how clean or ratty I’m going to make this thing. This is the air cleaners after a bit of tlc. Do I go full bore blinging them up with chrome? Half way house with silver paint or the sympathetic curation look with clear lacquer? 🤔

Leave them as they are, just wipe them over with some of that ACF50 stuff or WD40.

Yup, think you’re right Phill. Couple of mates think so too. Let it look it’s age. It’s not concourse so a few wrinkles and age won’t hurt

Lots of tyre choice in the wider narrower profile but I’m drawn to the old school skinny tyres 🤔 What ya reckon guys?

I'm all for tall side walls, personally I love the feel of the compliance. Bit of a boaty feel but judging by the vibe the cars is not going to be a 400 hp tarmac ripper.

Keep it real

Wheels off to be refurbished and shod with the new tyres. Set to work sorting the brakes. Think I need a front hub! Anyone? 47mm from face of disc to top if hub.

Anyone know the height of a g body wheel hub? I’m looking for a pair of 47mm hubs. Found a pair but listed as G body with no hub height given. Part number 9113415054R.
