I reckon Porsche know what they did better than me and D9!

The 912 is listed above that one on PET, does your VIN fit?

Will check in a bit. Do you do front caliper pin, clip and clip kits Matt?

Rear calipers blasted and painted with a first coat of aluminised high temp paint. Seals to replace, bleed nipples etc then ready to go back on

Bit more on the brakes. The pistons were proper stuck in. Thought I had the seals but they were too big. New ordered. D43DEBC4-E06A-4200-B8B9-A7D6D628DDC9.thumb.jpeg.09a970ce5e8f71a115d231f993186250.jpegB41A6E2F-EB90-4166-8121-CAE264EAF0A5.thumb.jpeg.a520a985fad1d867d8c99d3f5b149e9b.jpeg61290EDC-6501-44A1-80E3-320A4B73871D.thumb.jpeg.0366f39e1e320ad2fb8b50f1f92d9aa1.jpegE58168FB-2274-4B40-A73E-0661E6BEE3F9.thumb.jpeg.fcbcef3d0eba4fedcc149db5d0a7b76b.jpeg

Wheels went off for a refurb. Look not bad. Bit pitted but fits in with the theme of ratty but loved.

Have only just looked at this thread; car looks very "sweet".  Love the green and light interior combo, agree nice to keep a bit of "characterful patina".

Will watch with interest!

Got the engine tinware back in this week (required a partial engine drop), carbs, bypass filter and coil on, fan belt etc and thought I’d give her a first turnover. Turned fine but no fuel getting through and it dropped quite a bit of oil. 🙈

A bit of investigation on the oil front and the oil cooler inside the fan shroud was the culprit. The oil cooler is soft mounted on the later 912’s. Apparently the earlier pre 68 cars suffered from cracked cases because of vibration of the oil cooler on the case so Porsche worked out a way of soft mounting the cooler and still sealing it. (Sorry if I’m teaching grandma to suck eggs but it’s new to me). The elaborate arrangement is as below

D057FBC6-95DB-42D2-84F8-EE9DFEE29092.jpeg.bf7892e107395487750e739af71f7385.jpeg

I had the little sleeve missing off the mounting stud (6) so it kind of squished one of the o rings. Mistake 1. I also had a pair of old oil seals with the car. They looked good. Kind of moulded to fit in the mounting plate recess. I used these. Mistake 2.
I ordered new seals a while back which looked like plain white silicone tubes. A bit taller. Looks like they’re the right ones. Ordered a new metal bush from opc but won’t be here for a week (wish I had a lathe sometimes, 10 mins right, it’s tiny - 9.0mm OD, 6.5mm ID, 7.4mm long - ahh well, plenty to get on with). Hopefully, using the new seals and bush will seal the cooler up properly. It’s a faff to disassemble to get at the base of the cooler.

Fuel issue. My 68 originally had a mechanical fuel pump. Looks like this is often removed and blanked off and an electric fuel pump fitted. Fitted to the front circular cross member with a U bolt clamp. This looked a bit dodgy on on my car with a bit of foam and not quite tight enough. I’ll get a new better clamp I think and refit more securely. It looks like power is not getting to the pump. The cable was disconnected so I’m guessing someone was tampering or had issues. Hands up, not good at electrics. Looks like the fuel pump is grounded to the body of the pump and I need a fused power supply to run it. It looks like the wiring in there is run through a relay. Guess I’ll need to chase it back and make sure power is getting to the pump. 09A23298-93E8-43B4-AADC-ED014D1B54AB.thumb.jpeg.eda0a333a704b531396d524b45de0c34.jpeg

So a busy week on Isabella and a bit of progress. Good fun right. Hoping she’ll fire soon.

Haith, what a great little lock down project to be getting on with 👍

Think a 912 will perfectly compliment your other cars

I owned for a very brief time quite a rare 912, it was a RHD, one year only 1969 LWB, sold it on to someone braver than myself

Thanks Stephen. It really is good fun. Think she’ll fit right in. Something totally different. My wife has taken a shine and fancies driving her. I’m under instruction to get her running by spring.
Blinking heck, that red 69 looks like she needed a fair bit of tlc. Mine is ratty and tatty but seems to be quite solid really.

Today I washed and cleaned the seats and interior panels. They were proper grubby. Still plenty of patina included a couple of *beep* burns50272581-E332-4EDE-ABD4-EC6BAAA11C1B.thumb.jpeg.73473f6249a4b3a1d8ba5bd2e374001f.jpeg

Little job ticked off today, media blast the handbrake lever which was pretty grotty (forgot to take before pics 🙈) and hand clean the shift lever. Mask off a few delicate bits and etch prime then paint. Look a whole lot better. A bit of grease and reassembly, they’ll be ready to refit.

Been busily beavering away. Took the tinware apart and managed to get the oil cooler seals, new bush and all the fixing bolts on with the engine shroud in place.  Back together.
Replaced the fuel pump. Think the old one runs to be fair but for £20 on eBay, doesn’t hurt to have new. Installed a fused relay in place of the really old non fused hella. Pleasantly surprised to find whoever fitted the electric fuel pump conversion did a half decent job. They installed a dash mounted period looking switch to turn the pump off. Wiring wasn’t right but quickly solved.

She runs!

Idling a bit quick, running rich but for a first stab post carb rebuild, I’m chuffed. I’ve ordered a carb synchronometer to balance them up and been reading up on setup. I’ll get there.

Also tackled the interior floorpan. Had been wet so surface rust. I wire wheeled, applied rust converter and a good coat of rustoleum. Sound deadening and a insulation going in next then carpets and interior.

I did find a broken linkage lever behind the accelerator pedal (well it had been bent so was weakened) to the accelerator cable. So have to source one. Might refurbish the pedal box while I’m at it as a bit of movement in the bushes and it looks a bit grotty.

Car looks great Haith.

Some good work going on there. Really like the colour and the look of the dash area on the early cars is so clean (hope you're retaining the original steering wheel). Seems quite solid structurally too so following with interest.

Good job👍

Cheers

Pedal Box. The reverse lever was snapped on the throttle linkage so I've ordered a new one. Took the pedal box out yesterday. Bit grotty in there so I've cleaned and treated the area ready for paint. Also stripped the pedal box for a sand blast and repaint. New bronze bushes going in. New clutch return spring (bit sloppy).

Haven't updated this thread for ages as there didn't seem much appetite for it on here. Lots done and she was finally on the road this weekend!

Still lots of jobs to do but its so good to have her rolling. Sweet little car.

Anyone have experience of tuning Solex P40II's? I tried and have a synchronometer but can't find a YouTube vid that deals with this particular carb. There's a section in the manual but its not as easy as it makes out. As expected.
