Looks great Haith,

I’ve got a pair of twin 40 IDF’s on my VW Camper and there’s loads of tuning stuff on YouTube,  I’m sure there are similarities with your Solex’s in terms of idle jets, mains etc,   They explain how to balance using the synchronometer.  Might be worth a look.

I’ve  got backfire issues at the moment I’m to track down so been doing lots of reading on the subject.

Haven't updated this thread for ages as there didn't seem much appetite for it on here. Lots done and she was finally on the road this weekend!

Still lots of jobs to do but its so good to have her rolling. Sweet little car.

Anyone have experience of tuning Solex P40II's? I tried and have a synchronometer but can't find a YouTube vid that deals with this particular carb. There's a section in the manual but its not as easy as it makes out. As expected.

Lookin good Haith, is it fast?

Thanks Steve. I bit the bullet this morning and called a local guy into his V dubs etc. He said bring it over. Checked it over, had a fiddle. Was a little advanced and rich. Other than that he said get some miles on it. Been sat for a long time. Then tune it again. Think I was fairly close with my tune to be honest. But he had the kit to narrow it down. Will deffo look on YouTube again. Lots of vids on there but not one Solex 40 tune vid. Weird right.

Check your timing first with your backfire.

Anyone have any idea where I could get a 1968 one year only rear view mirror mounting plate for a Porsche 912 (also in Mercedes SL). Or how best to fabricate one? Steel, ally, carbon fibre, 3D print (might not be tough enough?)?

If it's the small part in the second picture you should be able to fettle that out of a piece of aluminium. Do you have the dimensions for one?

Thanks Phill. Yup. Only thing is it’s 6mm thick.

I made a template this morning and fabricated one from a block of nylon. A bit off a chopping board I pinched. Bit of cutting, bit of drilling, bit of filing. Sprayed it black. Seems to be working but no idea how robust it is to be honest. Feels ok.

Kindly chap in the states has the mounting plate and screws. Said he’ll send it over for the price if shipping.

Here’s my cheesy temporary fix

Static timing is right,  valves gaps right, plugs, leads and spark are good,  starting to wonder if there’s a blockage in one of the carbs,  I wish your VW man was near me,   Called a local VW man who I’ve used before and he’s going to come and have a look when he get time.

If it’s backfiring, idle mixture and/or timing would be my guess. Have you rebuilt the carbs? I completely disassembled mine and rebuilt. Cleaned every jet and blew it through etc. I cleaned the whole lot in an ultrasonic cleaner I bought. Came out much cleaner.
Happy to chuck em in the cleaner for you if you fancy having a go.

Thanks Haith,

Carbs are new a few thousand miles ago,  I’ve cleaned all the jets I can access ,  getting the carbs off is a bit of a task.

It has a Pertronix ignition system in the distributor, which normally either works or not at all but i’m going to swap it out for points and condenser this weekend, static timing is right.

Couple of pics from the weekend. Visited a pal who's just bought a pastel yellow 986 to do up (and the lucky b@&%rd has a fulvia too).  Loving little Izzy. 60 feels like redlining Daisy lol Hating the Solex carbs. They go out of tune if you breathe on them the wrong way.
