Changed the oil and filter today. Went for a run to warm the oil up to check the level. Got back into the garage with the engine running but when I unscrewed the oil filler cap the engine tickover fell slightly and it started to hunt. Everything ok when the filler cap replaced.

Should this happen or does it indicate another problem?

Normal, it's enclosed breathing system so the when you pop the cap the idle wavers.

By chance I was reading the FCP blog and came across the blog which explained the issue of idling problems including when the oil cap is removed.

I'll take a look at the breather restrictor fitted in the pipe connecting to the filling tube tomorrow.

Don't bother, it's there!

If it was not, the engine would stall as soon as you take the oil filler cap off.

The restrictor keeps the engine from stalling so you can check the oil level with the engine running. The dip in revs you describe is normal with the restrictor in place.
