Hope it works out and interested in seeing some pics.  I’m not too far from you as in south Sheffield.  Mine was done just before I got the car but needs some tidying up.  Main issue with sending to US is a new very valuable item getting lost in the post!  Did you insure when sending both ways?

Not my roof that’s in the US I’m afraid.

It’s @jehatwhitland that’s sent his over to Dan for a refurb. So maybe he can answer your questions on the insurance etc.?

I’m looking forward to seeing the results too.

Be nice to see your car sometime. (I’m a Sheffield lad😁

Well this has been emotional - folding up cars and suggestions to ship the car to New Jersey - given the astronomic price of a replacement Targa top not sure I'm about to take the risk of shipping it to the U.S,ofA!

I've had a heads-up about a local firm - I'll be contacting them next week to see what they can do for me - and report back.

Thanks for all the feed back and advice.

I should probably wait until my top is safely back before tempting fate but, so far, I've not had any issues shipping things to or from the US. Not as cost-effective as it once was - the pound tanked against the $ post Brexit and shipping costs are much higher now than even a year ago - but prices are still pretty competitive.  Also, the US was the main market for 911s, especially SCs and 3.2s, so there are quite a few specialist suppliers, breakers, etc.  Obviously, if you can find someone local who can do a good job and doesn't inflate the price massively just because it's a 911, then I definitely wouldn't argue with that,

It's been awhile since my last post here. I had my targa top rebuilt by Dan at Carsinc four years ago and at the same time I purchased a front seal from him too. I installed that myself and put the targa on and I can say it fits beautifully on both the front and rear edges. Prior to the rebuild the front edge would catch the air and looked pretty bad, the rear wasn't much better. As others have mentioned the noise in the cabin is never going to be as quiet as in a coupe, in my case I still have some window adjustments to make to improve it, but for now it works fine. As for Dan's work, I presume he has a jig to accurately control the size and shape while it's being rebuilt. As for differences in the cars, this is common in all car design, a tolerance of +/-10mm would not be at all surprising or unusual for any OEM. What you will notice on the targa top itself is that the top extends forward and rearward beyond the frame, this design is at least in some part meant to address the tolerance variations and mask them to give a good appearance.  The front and rear targa seals on the body will also compensate and help to give a good resulting fit in the front and rear, but not necessarily with the windows. The side seals and the windows themselves will need to be adjusted to work together and that's when having the car on hand makes sense.

Good luck to all that need a targa rebuild whether you use Dan at Carsinc or any of the UK based trimmers.

Just got the tracking number from Dan for the return shipment. So, your post is encouraging. 🙂   I've also ordered a new front seal as well.  Fingers crossed.

Overall, my experience of getting stuff done in the States has so far been really good.

Me too. I recently was trying to source a replacement petrol tank for an old Yamaha, with just two suppliers that I could find: one in Lincolnshire the other in Oregon. The guys in the States were far easier to deal with. New part made, shipped, delivered in four days!

I've just had some minor fettling and new headliner fitted to my Targa roof by www.stitch-perfect.com in Worcester and it looks very good. They tell me they have successfully done a few complete Targa roof refurbs but the outer on mine is ok for now so i just had the rotten headliner and a few 'hooks' replaced/refixed that position the front/rear roof bars.

Jonny Hart gave me the number of Artisan Autotrim in Tunbridge Wells. I visited Matthew on Tuesday - he has a wonderful SC Targa that he fully restored - more than immaculate. He is going to do my targa top in the New Year. Brilliant bloke with some serious skills.

I'll report back once the job is done.

Thanks Jonny.

Was there an update on this? I would be keen to hear any feedback as doing the top correctly is overdue following my past ham fisted efforts.

Thanks

Afternoon all,

New to the forum but have had mu '86 Targa for several years now.  My top went to Targa Dan as soon as I got the car.  He did a full refurb on the top and had it back to me in a couple weeks.  My top vinyl was curling up at the front and (surprise) I had a fly away which bent the guide pins.

Dan sent this back with all of those issues sorted and the top has performed extremely well for the last 4 years with no issues whatsoever.  Hopefully that helps anyone wondering about the quality of his work.

Cheers,

Brian
