That looks about right for the pricing. I had a crank reground last year with the same grind, the price of bearings will be the largest cost and from memory around £800! Good luck with the rebuild.

Thanks!

Luckily it's only the con-rod journals so £300 for the bearings......oh the joy!!

All packed up and ready for shipping!

Going for the crank regrind, flywheel check/reface and balancing!

There's a small pain...........in my wallet!

Now onto this next nightmare...

So what's the secret to getting this thing apart, anyone got much experience?

I've had a blowtorch on the connections, then apply plus-gas, and keep on repeating.

I've resisted mutilation so far so the flats are in good condition, and i'm really hoping to be able to take it apart without killing it.

Crows foot and torque wrench?

Or cut an access slot in an old ring spanner to allow it to pass over the pipes. You may also need to tweak the end angle of the spanner. Worked for me but there’s a good chance the thermostat threads will strip / stay in the nuts.

If you decide you’re replacing the pipes then just cut slots in the nuts before undoing them.

Do you need to split all of it?  It is possible to lift these whole system off the car and just disconnect from the engine end.  Lots of ways have been tried, heat is generally successful but I’ve always used a subtle application of percussion to the unions to loosen them. Get a couple of lump hammers, hold one against one of the flats and use the other to strike the opposite flat a few times.  Repeat around the union.

In the extreme do as Simon says and carefully split the unions using a Dremel

So the two pipes going to the motor are junk so I just split them...easy..

Just so you can see a shadow of thread then us a small chisel to split, repeat 180 degrees away.

Happy with that.

now what about the other two, I really don't want to scrap these lines, they're a bit mullered at the other end but not beyond repair. I've tried heat but the won't budge!!! Tried the double hammer-tap, the plus gas. Super easy to cut off but that'll be another grand to replace the lines 😭😭

I assume you've seen the 30mm Oil Line Tube Nut Replacement Kit  from here https://www.elephantracing.com/porsche/911/oil-cooling-for-911/oil-lines-hoses-fittings/bulk-hose-and-hose-ends/#:~:text=We have straight%2C 45 and, retrofitting and external oil cooler.

I'm sure someone on here had some for sale or bought some recently! Not cheap but cheaper than full lines.

I'd forgot about them, thanks!

I'm going to attack it with a good quality crowfoot or split ring with a torque wrench...if that doesn't work I'll go for that option.

Haha thanks Matt, you sound like my mother !!  I'll try with a breaker bar but probably it'll do more damage than good.

I think the Elephant racing repair nut is the best idea but very expensive, is there a more reasonably priced alternative?.....after all its just a nut and a spring collar!

Still cheaper that oil lines and thermostat!!

I bailed out and just cut them off, a few little scars but  basically its fine, a good clean and she'll be a gooden.

What about a key for opening these valves up, anyone got a part number or name of the tool.....this I don't have!

Crankcases back also.........more cleaning!!

Result is fantastic, worth it but not for the faint hearted, somewhat labour intensive to clean out after.

Main oil gallery plugs.

Does any of you guys have experience on this topic?

I've removed the main gallery plugs for cleaning , they measure 13mm and 22mm

The two part numbers i have for Porsche replacement are.... 14mm and 23mm, are these the right numbers and i have to machine them to fit or do i have the wrong numbers?

I just bought the Porsche Al plugs (a 964 part number IIRC) and they knocked in fine (3.0 SC crankcases).  I then added epoxy to ensure that they were sealed.

The page you posted showed the plugs as ‘oversize’, so I would assume (always dangerous) that with a lead in chamfer, they will seal nicely.

Thanks Peter.

I found them!!

91110118500  is the 22mm plug

91110118200  is the 13mm plug

Obviously changing the end digits from 00 to 01 denotes the oversize
